ResumoThis paper presents a brief description of the “washing ritual” of the Senhor do Bonfim Church, which took place in the city of Montes Claros, northern Minas Gerais, for the first time. City and regional urnbanda and candomblé groups participated in the comrnemorations of the 500*‘ anniversary of Brazil’s discovery. This event is discussed in questioning the expansion and social “legitimacy” of Afro-Brazilian Religions in the backlands of the “Gerais”
