ResumoRegulation of SO42− uptake and accumulation has been investigated in root tissues which assimilate to organic form only about 3% of the SO42− taken up. SO42− influx is inhibited after the accumulation of various anions. Using compartmental analysis of 35S tracer kinetics to measure intracellular SO42− fluxes, it has been shown that SO42− accumulation in the vacuole inhibits the SO42− influx across the tonoplast but not that across the plasmalemma. SO42− influx is not inhibited by loading the tissue with cysteine and methionine (reductive assimilation products of SO42−). Sulphate accumulation therefore is regulated principally at the tonoplast. Accumulation and reduction of SO42− appear to be independently regulated processes following the uptake of SO42− across the plasmalemma.
