ResumoThe taxonomic status of Acropeltis chilensis Montagne, Gelidium congestum Taylor, G. crispum Howe, G. filicinum Bory, G. howei Acleto and G. lingulatum Kützing is reviewed. The genus Acropeltis should be merged into Gelidium and the new combination Gelidium chilense (Montagne) Santelices & Montalva is therefore proposed. Gelidium filicinum is absent from Chile and restricted to the Society Islands, northern Perú and the Galápagos. The Peruvian species G. crispum and G. congestum probably represent forms of G. lingulatum. Gelidium howei from Perú cannot be distinguished from the newly typified G. filicinllm Bory.
