ResumoPulsed-field electrophoresis of 109 strains of Saccharomyces sensu strict was carried out, and karyotypes of various industrial yeasts were compared.Size of a chromosome was mathemat ically approximated from the distance it migrated relative to size markers, and then corrected by comparison with the sizes determined by sequencing studies on a laboratory strain. Data were so confused that only small chromosomes were subjected to statistic analysis.Average size of chromosome VI of sake yeasts was 287 kb and the largest, followed by that of shochu, awamori, alcohol, brewer's and baker's yeasts in this order, while that of wine yeasts was 256 kb and the smallest. Sake yeasts differed significantly from groups from alcohol yeasts and three other groups, with less than 0.1% risk.Chromosome I and IX shared a similar tendency with VI, while chromosome III was rather similar in size in all the groups.
