Resumo

We report on for the first time the bromatological profile, the preliminary phytochemical composition, the antioxidant capacity, and the in vitro neuroprotective effects of Blackberry Jam fruit (JF). The carbohydrates were the major macronutrients (20 g/100g) in the pulp of JF, which also showcased a low lipid content (0.14 g/100g) and an appreciable energy value (89 Kcal/100 g). One furanocoumarin, two sphingosines, and three flavonoids have been identified in the hydroalcoholic extract of the pulp (JFE) by mass spectrometry. The electrochemical index of JFE was around 6.8 μA/V and two reversible cathode peaks were observed up to 0.5 V, thus shedding light to its antioxidant capacity, which was reinforced by the results of DPPH• and ABTS+ radical scavenging assays. The JFE significantly decreased both the in vitro lipid peroxidation and contents of carbonyl proteins in H2O2 treated murine brain cells. Conversely, the JFE increased the superoxide dismutase and catalase activities. The JFE also markedly decreased both the in vitro acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase activities, with up to 26-fold more sensitivity for the last one. Therefore, allied to a nutritional value, this Amazon superfruit may contribute for mitigating the neurodegeneration related to the oxidative stress, bringing nutraceutical prospects for the management of several neurodegenerative and neuropsychological disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, autism spectrum disorder and attention deficit hyperactive syndrome.
