ResumoThe use of steel structures in civil construction is growing due to their flexibility and construction speed. To increase competitiveness, efforts are being made to reduce material usage without compromising safety, resulting in lower production costs and faster construction processes. In this work, we describe the structural design of a column according to NBR 8800 standards and present an alternative methodology based on the Section Gold optimization method to reduce the mass of the steel profile. The project was developed for a structure in Cascavel, Paraná, following the guidelines of ABNT NBR 8800:2008.Using the GERDAU environment, we developed a code to calculate the dimensions of the column, minimizing its mass based on classical equations of material strength using the Section Gold method.By comparing the results with conventional design, we concluded that the method used provides a dimensional reduction of 25.56% to 52.58%, representing a 57% savings in the column's mass while maintaining its resistance to critical loads.
