The efficient oxidation of alkanes (cyclohexane, n-heptane, methylcyclohexane, isooctane, cis- and trans-1,2-dimethylcyclohexane) to the corresponding alkyl hydroperoxides with the system (n-Bu4N)[VO3]/H2O2/trifluoroacetic acid/MeCN–H2O was investigated in detail by 51V NMR, kinetic and theoretical methods. It has been established on the basis of the selectivity parameters in the oxidation of linear and branched alkanes and the kinetic peculiarities of the cyclohexane oxidation that the reaction mechanism ...

Haemophilus parasuis is the agent responsible for causing Glässer's disease, but little is known about the pathogenic determinants of this major pig disease. Here we describe, for the pathogenic strain Nagasaki, the molecular characterization of 13 trimeric autotransporters as assessed by the presence of YadA C-terminal translocator domains which were classified into three groups. All passenger domains possess motifs and repeats characteristic of adhesins, hemagglutinins, and invasins with various ...

Changsheng Chen, Pina Marziliano, Alex C. Kot,

The finite rate of innovation (FRI) principle is developed for sampling a class of non-bandlimited signals that have a finite number of degrees of freedom per unit of time, i.e., signals with FRI. This sampling scheme is later extended to three classes of sampling kernels with compact support and applied to the step edge reconstruction problem by treating the image row by row. In this paper, we regard step edges as 2D FRI signals and reconstruct them block by block. The step edge parameters are obtained ...

Gran Canaria, one of the two main islands of the Canary Archipelago off NW Africa, has been volcanically active for at least 15 million years. The island went through several volcanic cycles that varied greatly in composition and extrusive and intrusive activity. The complex orography of the island has excluded extensive land geophysical surveys on the island. A review of the available geophysical information on the island shows that it has been obtained mainly through marine and airborne geophysical ...

Three delta beta-thalassemia homozygotes were found in a Mexican family. Both parents and two sibling had heterozygous delta beta-thalassemia with about 10% Hb F, mild microcytosis and mild hypochromia, while three siblings were normal. Hb F, which was the only Hb component in the homozygotes, had equal quantities of Ggamma and Agamma chains as in BgammaAgamma-delta beta-thalassemia. The homozygotes had comparable erythrocytic indices which were about the same as those of the heterozygotes. However, ...

In this work, well-defined elastin-like recombinamers (ELRs) were studied as a choice to the existing nonviral vectors due to their biocompatibility and ease of scale-up. Functional motifs, namely penetratin and LAEL fusogenic peptides were incorporated into a basic ELR sequence, and imidazole groups were subsequently covalently bound obtaining ELRs with new functionalities. Stable polyplexes composed of plasmid DNA and ELRs were formed. A particle size around 200 nm and a zeta potential up to nearly + ...

Unsustainable hunting is one of the leading drivers of global biodiversity loss, yet very few direct measures exist due to the difficulty in monitoring this cryptic activity. Where guns are commonly used for hunting, such as in the tropical forests of the Americas and Africa, acoustic detection can potentially provide a solution to this monitoring challenge. The emergence of low cost autonomous recording units (ARUs) brings into reach the ability to monitor hunting pressure over wide spatial and ...

Typical diagnostic, coved-type 1, Brugada ECG patterns fluctuate spontaneously over time with a high proportion of non-diagnostic ECG patterns. Insulin modulates ion transport mechanisms and causes hyperpolarization of the resting potential. We report our experience with unmasking J-ST changes in response to a dextrose-insulin test.Nine patients, mean age 40.5±19.4years (range: 15-65years), presented initially with a non-diagnostic ECG pattern, which was suggestive of Brugada syndrome (group I). Abstract The threat of Geomagnetically Induced Currents (GICs) driven by severe Space Weather looms over technological systems such as power grids. Assessing their vulnerability is thus vital to avoid damages or even disruption of the electrical power supply. This endeavor, however, entails an interdisciplinary approach, ranging from the characterization of the geoelectrical structure of the Earth beneath and around the area of interest, or the modeling of the power network from its parameters and ...

The genome of the highly pathogenic Haemophilus parasuis Nagasaki strain (serovar 5) was sequenced to 99 % completion. A genomic comparison with two other pathogenic serovar 5 H. parasuis strains identified six genes per genome (bmaA1–bmaA6) encoding β-barrel monomeric autotransporters, bmaA2 and bmaA3 being pseudogenes in at least one strain. The remaining encoded proteins were predicted to belong to the subtilisin (BmaA1 and BmaA4) and cysteine (BmaA5 and BmaA6) protease families. Allelic polymorphism ...

Abstract Tenerife island geology is one of the most complexes of the Canaries archipelago. This complexity is evidenced by the existing controversy regarding the lateral or vertical collapse origin of the Las Cañadas caldera. The resistivity structure of the Las Cañadas caldera has been determined by the 3‐D inversion of 188 broadband magnetotelluric data. The resistivity distribution obtained in the final model shows clear evidences of the presence of a vertical structure under the Teide, associated ...

In this work we have done a 3D joint interpretation of magnetotelluric and seismic tomography models. Previously we have described different techniques to infer the inner structure of the Earth. We have focused on volcanic regions, specifically on Tenerife Island volcano (Canary Islands, Spain). In this area, magnetotelluric and seismic tomography studies have been done separately. The novelty of the present work is the combination of both techniques in Tenerife Island. For this aim we have applied ...

Tenerife has been the subject of numerous studies covering a wide range of fields. Many studies have been focused on characterising the magmatic plumbing system. Even so, a controversy still exists regarding the location and size of the current magma chambers. Several magnetotelluric (MT) surveys have been carried out in the island, but no conductivity anomalies associated with the chambers have been detected. We report the results of a set of tests conducted against the 3-D resistivity model of ...

Glässer's disease is a re-emerging swine disease characterized by a severe septicaemia. Vaccination has been widely used to control the disease, although there is a lack of extended cross-protection. Trimeric autotransporters, a family of surface exposed proteins implicated in host-pathogen interactions, are good vaccine candidates. Members of this family have been described in Haemophilus parasuis and designated as virulence-associated trimeric autotransporters (VtaA). In this work, we produced ...

Haemophilus parasuis is the etiological agent of Glässer's disease in swine, characterized by fibrinous polyserositis, polyarthritis and meningitis. The lack of a vaccine against a broad spectrum of strains has limited the control of the disease. Recently, virulence associated trimeric autotransporters (VtaA) were described as antigenic proteins of H. parasuis. In this study 6 VtaA were produced as recombinant proteins and used to immunize snatch-farrowed, colostrum-deprived piglets. Immunized animals ...
