In this work we report evidences of a functional relationship between C3G and p38 MAPK in the apoptotic effect of STI-571 on the chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) cell line K562. This has been demonstrated by knocking down C3G and p38alpha using the interfering RNA approach, as well as through targeting p38 by its inhibitor SB203580. The results indicate that p38 is a mediator of the STI-571-induced apoptosis, while C3G plays a negative role on STI-571-mediated p38 activation through a Rap1-dependent ...

Colorectal cancer (CRC) comprises the third most common cancer worldwide and the second regarding number of deaths. In order to make a correct and early diagnosis to predict metastasis formation, biomarkers are an important tool. Although there are multiple signaling pathways associated with cancer progression, the most recognized are the MAPK pathway, p53 pathway, and TGF-β pathway. These pathways regulate many important functions in the cell, such as cell cycle regulation, proliferation, differentiation, ...

Proton therapy has advantages and pitfalls comparing with photon therapy in radiation therapy. Among the limitations of protons in clinical practice we can selectively mention: uncertainties in range, lateral penumbra, deposition of higher LET outside the target, entrance dose, dose in the beam path, dose constraints in critical organs close to the target volume, organ movements and cost. In this review, we combine proposals under study to mitigate those pitfalls by using individually or in combination: ( ...

A mathematical age structure model for dry matter production (photosynthesis) and allocation to plant parts in European grape ( Vitis vinifera L.) is presented, and it is used to examine the priorities and allocation dynamics of photosynthate partitioning to respiration, reserves, leaf, stem and root tissues (i.e., vegetative), and fruit in four varieties. In the model, photosynthate is allocated first to respiration, then fruit and reserves, and lastly to vegetative growth, while the allocation rates ...

Summary: Benign epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (BECTS) is characterized by brief stereotypical partial seizures with motor and/or sensory symptoms with frequent secondarily generalized seizures. The interictal EEG shows slow, disphasic, high‐voltage spikes in the centrotemporal areas. The few published examples of ictal tracings depict focal rhythmic sharp waves and spikes without significant postictal slowing. We report an ictal event in BECTS that is unusual in the evolution and polarity of ...

Abstract In six patients with characteristic symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome, electrophysiologic studies were normal, except for an initial positive deflection of the thenar muscle action potential with median nerve stimulation at the elbow but not at the wrist. This phenomenon is only seen with coexistent carpal tunnel syndrome and median to ulnar nerve communication and suggests carpal tunnel syndrome is present in these patients. As normal electrophysiologic studies occur in carpal tunnel ...

The improvement in the transmission range in wireless applications without the use of batteries remains a significant challenge in identification applications. In this paper, we describe a heterogeneous wireless identification network mostly powered by kinetic energy, which allows the localization of animals in open environments. The system relies on radio communications and a global positioning system. It is made up of primary and secondary nodes. Secondary nodes are kinetic-powered and take advantage ...

We present here evidences supporting a negative regulation of p38α MAPK activity by C3G in MEFs triggered by stress, which can mediate cell death or survival depending on the stimuli. Upon serum deprivation, C3G induces survival through inhibition of p38α activation, which mediates apoptosis. In contrast, in response to H2O2, C3G behaves as a pro-apoptotic molecule, as its knock-down or knock-out enhances survival through up-regulation of p38α activation, which plays an anti-apoptotic role under ...

The improvement of odometry systems in collective robotics remains an important challenge for several applications. Social odometry is an online social dynamics which confers the robots the possibility to learn from the others. Robots neither share any movement constraint nor access to centralized information. Each robot has an estimate of its own location and an associated confidence level that decreases with distance traveled. Social odometry guides a robot to its goal by imitating estimated locations, ...

Analysis of the literature on the electrophysiologic features of infantile botulism was undertaken. Small compound muscle action potential amplitude is a very sensitive feature but lacks specificity. The decremental response to 2- to 3-Hz repetitive nerve stimulation is inconsistent and not a reliable sign. Tetanic and posttetanic facilitation are highly sensitive and highly specific. Absence of posttetanic exhaustion is also highly specific for infant botulism and shared only by hypermagnesemia. ...

In this paper, we propose a swarm intelligence localization strategy in which robots have to locate different resource areas in a bounded arena and forage between them. The robots have no knowledge of the arena dimensions and of the number of resource areas. The strategy is based on peer-to-peer local communication without the need for any central unit. Social Odometry leads to a self-organized path selection. We show how collective decisions lead the robots to choose the closest resource site from ...

The problem of universal simulation given a training sequence is studied both in a stochastic setting and for individual sequences. In the stochastic setting, the training sequence is assumed to be emitted by a Markov source of unknown order, extending previous work where the order is assumed known and leading to the notion of twice-universal simulation. A simulation scheme, which partitions the set of sequences of a given length into classes, is proposed for this setting and shown to be asymptotically ...

Foraging robots involved in a search and retrieval task may create paths to navigate faster in their environment. In this context, a swarm of robots that has found several resources and created different paths may benefit strongly from path selection. Path selection enhances the foraging behavior by allowing the swarm to focus on the most profitable resource with the possibility for unused robots to stop participating in the path maintenance and to switch to another task. In order to achieve path ...

The small GTP-ase Rac-1 can trigger p38 MAPK activation and, in turn, p38alpha can regulate signalling pathways that potentially impinge on Rac-1 activity. We have investigated the cross-talk between p38alpha and Rac-1 and found that p38alpha regulates the association between Rac-1 and caveolin-1 in serum-deprived cardiomyocytes. This interaction depends on cell attachment and correlates with higher levels of active Rac-1. Actin organization might regulate the formation of Rac-1-caveolin-1 complexes. ...

Slender flexible structures such as plants are deformed by external flow. When the deformation is significant, this results in a reduction of drag. We give a theoretical value of the exponent that characterizes the drag law. This theoretical value is shown to compare well with experimental data on a very large variety of plants. It is found that reconfiguration affects more the local bending stress than the total drag. Moreover, a non-linearity in the bending law does not affect significantly the ...

In the proposed scenario, task allocation consists in assigning the robots to the found targets in a 2-D arena. The expected distribution is obtained from the targets' qualities that are represented as scalar values. Decision-making mechanism is distributed and robots autonomously choose their assignments taking into account targets' qualities and distances. We tested the scalability of the proposed ...

We reveal a novel pro-survival role for mammalian p38α in response to H2O2, which involves an up-regulation of antioxidant defenses. The presence of p38α increases basal and H2O2-induced expression of the antioxidant enzymes: superoxide-dismutase 1 (SOD-1), SOD-2, and catalase through different mechanisms, which protects from reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation and prevents cell death. p38α was found to regulate (i) H2O2-induced SOD-2 expression through a direct regulation of transcription mediated ...
