Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common cause of chronic liver disease worldwide, and its incidence has been increasing in recent years because of the high prevalence of obesity and metabolic syndrome in the Western population. Alcohol-related liver disease (ArLD) is the most common cause of cirrhosis and constitutes the leading cause of cirrhosis-related deaths worldwide. Both NAFLD and ArLD constitute well-known causes of liver damage, with some similarities in their pathophysiology. ...

We studied the short-term psychological effects of the COVID-19 crisis and the quarantine on 3550 adults from the Spanish population in a cross-sectional survey. Symptoms of anxiety, depression, and stress were analyzed using the 21-item version of the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale. Symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder were analyzed using the Impact of Event Scale. Symptomatic scores of anxiety, depression, and stress were observed in 20% to 30% of respondents. Symptomatic scores indicating ...

The aim of this study was to analyze the psychological impact of COVID-19 in the university community during the first weeks of confinement. A cross-sectional study was conducted. The Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21) was employed to assess symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress. The emotional impact of the situation was analyzed using the Impact of Event Scale. An online survey was fulfilled by 2530 members of the University of Valladolid, in Spain. Moderate to extremely severe scores ...

The goal of this study is to characterize the thermal performance of the opaque ventilated facade from sample-scale to building scale. To begin with, a representative sample has been built in order to test it in outdoor conditions using a traceable and precise methodology. The testing equipment used is a PASLINK test cell developed by DYNASTEE network at the Basque Government Laboratory of Quality Control in Buildings. The experimental results provide information to define a mathematical model of ...

Rock crystal appears relatively frequently in Late Prehistoric Iberian sites, especially in the form of micro-blades and knapping debris. With some exceptions, however, these finds have seldom been looked into in any detail, and therefore little is known about the technology involved in the use of this material, its social and economic relevance or its symbolic significance. In this paper we examine a collection of rock crystal artefacts recently found at Valencina de la Concepción (Seville, Spain), ...

Prospective drug-induced liver injury (DILI) registries are important sources of information on idiosyncratic DILI. We aimed to present a comprehensive analysis of 843 patients with DILI enrolled into the Spanish DILI Registry over a 20-year time period.Cases were identified, diagnosed and followed prospectively. Clinical features, drug information and outcome data were collected.A total of 843 patients, with a mean age of 54 years (48% females), were enrolled up to 2018. Hepatocellular injury was ...

This paper considers the effect that different hot water storage tank modelling approaches have on the global simulation of residential CHP plants as well as their impact on their economic feasibility. While a simplified assessment of the heat storage is usually considered in the feasibility studies of CHP plants in buildings, this paper deals with three different levels of modelling of the hot water tank: actual stratified model, ideal stratified model and fully mixed model. These three approaches ...

Strict confinement and social distancing measures have been imposed due to the COVID-19 pandemic in many countries. The aim was to assess the temporal evolution of the psychological impact of the COVID-19 crisis and lockdown from two surveys, separated by one month, performed in Spain. Symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress, and the psychological impact of the situation were longitudinally analyzed using the Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21) and the Impact of Event Scale (IES) respectively. ...

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is currently the most prevalent cause of chronic liver disease (CLD). Currently, the only therapeutic recommendation available is a lifestyle change. However, adherence to this approach is often difficult to guarantee. Alteration of the microbiota and an increase in intestinal permeability seem to be key in the development and progression of NAFLD. Therefore, the manipulation of microbiota seems to provide a promising therapeutic strategy. One way to do so ...

The objective of this study was to analyze CD34+ cell recovery and T cell depletion (TCD) achieved in CD34+ cell grafts using either immunoadsorption or immunomagnetic methods applied to leukapheresis products from healthy donors. We also wanted to determine the kinetics of engraftment and incidence and severity of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) after allogeneic transplantation of selected CD34+ cells. HLA-identical sibling donors received G-CSF. After leukapheresis, peripheral blood progenitor ...

Reduced‐intensity conditioning (RIC) regimens for allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (SCT) have been shown to lead to engraftment of donor stem cells without the severe extra‐haematological toxicities of traditional myeloablative transplants. Between December 1998 and December 2000, 76 patients underwent a RIC peripheral blood SCT in a prospective multicentre study. The median age was 53 years, and 57 patients were beyond the early phase of their disease. The conditioning regimens ...

We have developed an all-atom pairwise additive model for hydrogen peroxide using an optimization procedure based on artificial neural networks (ANNs). The model is based on experimental molecular geometry and includes a dihedral potential that hinders the cis-type configuration and allows for crossing the trans one, defined between the planes that have the two oxygen atoms and each hydrogen. The model's parametrization is achieved by training simple ANNs to minimize a target function that measures ...

Abstract A study on 315 patients undergoing transplantation with CD34+ selected blood cells from HLA-identical siblings was performed to determine risk factors for acute GVHD (aGVHD). Recipients of a dose of CD34+ cells (× 106/kg) of 2 or less, more than 2 to 4, and more than 4 had a cumulative incidence of aGVHD grades I-IV of 21%, 35%, and 43%, respectively (log-rankP = .01); similarly, recipients of a dose of CD3+ cells (× 106/kg) of 0.05 or less, more than 0.05 to 0.1, and more than 0.1 had a cumulative ...
