ABSTRACT Heterologous prime-boost immunization with DNA and various recombinant poxviruses encoding malaria antigens is capable of inducing strong cell-mediated immune responses and partial protection in human sporozoite challenges. Here we report a series of trials assessing recombinant fowlpox virus and modified vaccinia virus Ankara encoding the Plasmodium falciparum circumsporozoite protein in various prime-boost combinations, doses, and application routes. For the first time, these vaccines ...

Abstract BACKGROUND Grape juice consumption may prevent several chronic diseases owing to the presence of phenolic compounds, which have an important role in the reduction of oxidative stress. This study investigated the polyphenol content and antioxidant activities of grape juices from two cultivars: BRS ‐Cora and Isabella. Total polyphenol content ( TPC ), anthocyanins, antioxidant capacity (oxygen radical absorbance capacity, ferric reducing antioxidant power and 1,1‐diphenyl‐2‐picrylhydrazyl), and ...

Several risk factors have been associated with suicidal behavior (SB) in bipolar disorder (BD), but little is known regarding possible protective factors. Religiosity has been related to favorable outcomes in mental health and to a reduction in the risk of SB, although the relation between BD, religiosity and SB remains under-investigated. The objective of this study was to evaluate the association between religiosity and SB in euthymic bipolar I outpatients. In this study, 164 outpatients with BD ...

Abstract Resistant starch can be used to reduce the availability of carbohydrates in baked products. In this study, the effect of type 4 resistant wheat starch ( RS 4 ) on wheat flour dough and breads was evaluated. Wheat flour was substituted by RS 4 at 10%, 20% and 30% w/w ( RS 10, RS 20 and RS 30, respectively). Rheological and thermal behaviours of dough were evaluated. Besides, bread quality, starch digestibility and bread staling were analysed. All substituted dough exhibited viscoelastic behaviour ...

Manganese-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MEMRI) exploits the biophysical similarity of Ca2+ and Mn2+ to map the brain's activity in vivo. However, to what extent different Ca2+ channels contribute to the enhanced signal that MEMRI provides and how Mn2+ dynamics influence Mn2+ brain accumulation after systemic administration of MnCl2 are not yet fully understood. Here, we demonstrate that mice lacking the L-type Ca2+ channel 1.2 (Cav1.2) in the CNS show approximately 50% less increase in MEMRI ...

A non-enterotoxigenic strain of Aeromonas hydrophila isolated from diarrheic stools of an 8-month-old child was found to cause vacuolation in Caco-2 cells. The vacuoles became prominent 60 min after addition of the bacterial culture to the cell monolayers and, after 120 min, a complete disruption of the monolayers was observed. Cell vacuolation was not detected when Caco-2 monolayers were tested with sterile filtrates of overnight cultures of the A. hydrophila vacuolating strain AH14846. This strain ...

ABSTRACT Aeromonas caviae is a Gram-negative, motile and rod-shaped facultative anaerobe that is increasingly being recognized as a cause of diarrhea in children. Here we present the first genome sequence of an A. caviae strain that was isolated as the sole pathogen from a child with profuse diarrhea.

This study analyzed the involvement of tetA and tetE genes in the tetracycline resistance of 16 strains of genus Aeromonas, isolated from clinical and food sources. Polymerase chain reactions revealed that 37.5% of the samples were positive for tetA, and also 37.5% were tetE positive. One isolate was positive for both genes. Only the isolate A. caviae 5.2 had its resistance associated to the presence of a plasmid, pSS2. The molecular characterization of pSS2 involved the construction of its restriction ...

Aim: Evaluation of adherence and invasion of Aeromonas spp. to human colon carcinoma cell lines Caco‐2 and HT29 and assessment of cytotoxic activity. Methods and Results: A number of 27 strains of Aeromonas caviae and 23 strains of Aeromonas hydrophila was analysed. All strains were capable to adhere to sub‐confluent monolayers of Caco‐2 and HT29 cell types, presenting aggregative and diffuse adherence patterns cells, respectively. In the cytotoxic assays all strains showed cytopathic and/or cytotoxic ...

Rather than acute inflammation, long-standing multiple sclerosis (MS) course is hallmarked by relentless axonal loss and brain atrophy, both with subtle clinical expression and scarcely visible on conventional MRI studies. Brain atrophy imaging has sophisticated methodological requirements, not always practical and accessible to most centers. Corpus callosum (CC) is a major inter-hemispheric white matter bundle, grossly affected by long term MS and easily assessed by MRI. To determine whether a practical ...

To determine the prevalence of resistance to ampicillin, chloramphenicol, streptomycin, sulphonamides, and tetracyclines (ACSSuT) in Salmonella serovar Typhimurium definitive [phage] type (DT) 193 strains isolated from human sources over the last four decades. From 2008 to 2010, 553 DT193 isolates out of 810 human-origin Salmonella ser. Typhimurium phage-typed strains isolated from the 1970s through 2008 were selected and tested for ACSSuT resistance: 91 strains isolated during the 1970s, 65 from the ...

Fifty-six Escherichia coli strains, serogrouped as EPEC, isolated from three different brands of pasteurised milk commercialised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, were tested for enteropathogenicity markers. Most of the strains (71.4%) were adherent to HEp-2 cells. The adherent strains were distributed among 7 EPEC serogroups (O26, O55, O111, O114, O125, O127, O128, O158). Although almost half of these strains (33.9%) presented unrecognisable adherence phenotypes, classical adherence patterns (localised-like, ...

A total of 35 samples (1000 ml each) of pasteurized milk and 25 samples (100 g each) of white cheese purchased at supermarkets in Rio de Janeiro were analyzed for the presence of Aeromonas . Strains of Aeromonas were isolated from 28.5% of pasteurized milk and 32% of white cheese samples. Standard Plate counts in the pasteurized milk samples ranged from 7.2 × 10* to 2.5 × 105 CFU/ml. Total and fecal coliform counts in white cheese samples ranged from 1.9 × 10* to 2.4 × 105 most probable number per g and 3.2 × ...

This study highlights the incidence of resistance and the presence of plasmids in human and food isolates of Aeromonas in Brazil. A total of 83 Aeromonas spp. strains (28 isolated from human and 55 from fresh lettuce) were studied. Thirty-five were identified as A. hydrophila complex and 48 as A. caviae complex. All strains were shown to be susceptible to imipenem, amikacin, gentamicin, tobramycin and ciprofloxacin by the disk diffusion method. Resistance to antimicrobial agents was observed in strains ...
