The effective incorporation of photovoltaic (PV) elements into the urban environment, specifically in buildings, is a challenging process. Apart from the aesthetic limitations of having black and opaque PV cells when installed in building façades, they are not optimally positioned for high-efficiency electric energy generation because of shadowing effects due to neighboring trees and buildings. Emphasis is given to luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) that have emerged as an appealing solution for ...

European chestnut is the most important cash crop in the highlands of NE Portugal. However, limited data on cropping technique are available to help farmers make decisions. This work is motivated by the lack of data related to chestnut response to fertilizer application. It reports results from a field fertilization trial consisting of the application of a combination of lime (L), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), and boron (B), namely LNPKB, NPKB, -NPKB, N-PKB, NP-KB, and NPK-B. In this work results of two field and two pot K fertilizer experiments are presented. One of the field trials was conducted in a commercial young olive grove. The second was conducted in a plantation purposely established for this study. In the two field and the first pot experiment, the K supply was the single variation factor. The second pot experiment was arranged as a factorial ...

Abstract Soil conditioners, such as biochar and zeolites, may play an important role in agriculture if they increase nutrient use efficiency, in particular, that of phosphorus (P), due to the depletion of phosphate rocks from which P‐fertilizers are manufactured. This study report results from a field trial, where maize was grown in summer and oats in winter, and from a pot experiment with maize. In the field, the use of biochar and zeolites, along with an untreated control in combination with various ...

The use of a controlled-release fertilizer (CRF) was studied in a traditional rainfed olive grove in a Mediterranean climate where precipitation is very irregular, particularly in the spring. The objective of the study was to assess whether a CRF can improve the olive tree's performance compared to a conventional nitrogen (N) fertilizer (CF), by supplying N gradually and reducing the risk of potential N loss from leaching. The fertilized treatments showed better plant N nutritional status, which resulted ...

Nitrogen (N) is a limiting ecological factor for plant growth in most agroecosystems. Biological N fixation, especially from nodulated legumes, has been promoted in recent decades as an alternative or complement to industrially synthesized N fertilizers. The possibility of utilizing N-fixing organisms from the phyllosphere that demonstrate effectiveness across a wide range of crops is particularly exciting. In this study, we examined the N-fixing capacity and the impact on lettuce growth of an inoculant ...
