ABSTRACT The return to dental practice in pandemic times is a new challenge due to the generation and dispersion of droplets and aerosols that may contain the SARS-CoV-2 virus, the etiological agent of covid-19. In the last months some droplet and aerosol containment strategies have been circulating on the internet, however, until now there is no evidence in the literature to prove the effectiveness of such barriers. Thus, using a microbial dispersion model with the fast handpiece, the aim of this ...

Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer among women, and ∼70–80% of these cancers are associated with two human papillomavirus types: HPV16 and HPV18. Several studies have reported that intra‐type diversity is associated with the progression of infection to invasive cancer. Herein, we report the genetic diversity of HPV16 and HPV18 in a cohort of 594 Brazilian women with invasive cervical cancer and describe the prevalence of lineages and intra‐type diversity prior to the implementation ...

Establishing the risk of malignant transformation (MT) in oral leukoplakia is usually based on grading oral epithelial dysplasia (OED) on biopsy tissue, for which two systems are proposed: a 3-tier and a binary system. Only very few actuarial studies have tested the accuracy of such methods in predicting MT, especially for the binary system. This study aimed to assess the accuracy of the two grading systems in predicting MT in a cohort of oral leukoplakia (OL) from Brazil, with follow-up data. The sample ...

Epoxyeicosatrienoic acids (EET) and related epoxy fatty acids (EpFA) are endogenous anti-inflammatory compounds, which are converted by the soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH) to dihydroxylethersatrienoic acids (DHETs) with lessened biological effects. Inhibition of sEH is used as a strategy to increase EET levels leading to lower inflammation. Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic autoimmune disease that leads to destruction of joint tissues. This pathogenesis involves a complex interplay between the immune ...

Abstract Background Cervical cancer is the fourth most common type of cancer affecting women globally. In Brazil, it is the third most frequent type of cancer in women and HPV is present in approximately 90% of cases. Evidence suggests that variants of HPV 16 can interfere biologically and etiologically during the development of cervical cancer. Methods Cervix tumor fragments were collected, their DNA was extracted, and nested PCR was used to detect HPV. Positive samples were sequenced to determine ...

Multiple infections by HPV genotypes are frequently detected in HPV+ cervical lesions but the interaction between each viral genotype during carcinogenesis is poorly understood. Here we carried out a comprehensive study to characterize the multiple HPV expression and integration by RNA-seq analyses of 19 invasive cervical carcinomas coinfected by several HPV genotypes. Analysis of tumor DNA by a hybridization assay indicated multiple infections ranging from 2 to 6 different HPV genotypes. RNA-seq ...

Human papillomavirus 18 (HPV18) E6 and E7 oncogenes are transcribed as a single bicistronic E6E7 pre-mRNA. The E6 ORF region in the bicistronic E6E7 pre-mRNA contains an intron. Splicing of this intron disrupts the E6 ORF integrity and produces a spliced E6*I RNA for efficient E7 translation. Here we report that the E6 intron has two overlapped branch point sequences (BPS) upstream of its 3' splice site, with an identical heptamer AACUAAC, for E6*I splicing. One heptamer has a branch site adenosine ( ...

Access control is a crucial part of a system's security, restricting what actions users can perform on resources. Therefore, access control is a core component when dealing with e-Health data and resources, discriminating which is available for a certain party. We consider that current systems that attempt to assure the share of policies between facilities are prone to system's and network's faults and do not assure the integrity of policies lifecycle. By approaching this problem with the use of ...

Most patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) treated with tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) will relapse if treatment is withdrawn, but various trials have recently demonstrated that a significant proportion of patients who achieved a stable and deep molecular response (DMR) can stop therapy without relapsing. Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) presents poor prognosis, and patients diagnosed with this tumor currently lack target treatments. Therefore, in order to identify potential targets for ESCC treatment, we carried out a transcriptome analysis with ESCC and paired nonmalignant surrounding mucosa samples, followed by a master regulator analysis, and further explored the role of the identified central regulatory genes through in vivo and in vitro assays. Among the transcription factors deregulated/ ...

We analyzed the transcriptional profile of two multidrug resistant (MDR) cell lines (Lucena 1 and FEPS) derived from the same drug-sensitive cell K562. Microarray data identified 130 differentially expressed genes (DEG) between K562 vs. Lucena 1, 1932 between K562 vs. FEPS, and 1211 between Lucena 1 versus FEPS.
