This study proposes a methodological guide to explore and select materials for executive aircraft interiors, contributing toward a perspective of materials requirements, indicators and strategies to design more environmentally sustainable products. This was motivated by the signs from the aviation industry to reduce its environmental impact and the permanent need to push for cost efficiency. The guide includes a schedule framework of materials requirements for sustainable design, and also aeronautical ...

Following the industrial revolution, major economic and populational growth took place, and, therefore, solid waste generation increased exponentially. Nowadays, waste management still generates major impacts because the current wide offer of waste management strategies includes many solutions that produce suboptimal results, such as landfill or waste incineration. From a circular economy perspective, composting is a potentially sustainable option to treat the organic fraction of solid waste and ...

Two soil amendments, biochar and zeolites, were evaluated in their potential for increasing crop productivity and agro-system sustainability. The effect of biochar and zeolites, in combination with four nitrogen (N) rates [0 (N0), 50 (N50), 100 (N100), and 200 (N200) kg ha−1], on crop yield, N use efficiency, and soil properties was evaluated in a cropping system of irrigated forage maize (Zea mays L.) grown in summer and oats (Avena sativa L.) grown in winter as a catch crop. Biochar increased soil organic ...

Strategies for waste valorisation from domestic and agro-industrial activities must be pursued, and its use as a soil amendment is an interesting possibility. In this four-year study, the effect of applying municipal solid waste (MSW), farmyard manure (FYM), bottom wood ash supplemented with nitrogen (Ash + N), the inorganic fertilization common in the region (50 kg ha−1 N, P2O5 and K2O) (Control) and this inorganic fertilization supplemented with 70 kg N ha−1 (High N) was assessed in a rainfed olive grove ...

Tall cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. costata, cv. Penca de Mirandela) is grown in Portugal during autumn and winter months when heavy rains can be expected. In this agrosystem the management of N is a considerable challenge due to the risk of nitrate leaching. Field experiments with tall cabbage and rye were carried out during the growing seasons of 2007/2008 and 2008/2009. The experimental design included three fertilisers that delay N availability by different mechanisms [Floranid permanent, containing ...

The deployment of large mesh-type wireless networks is a challenge due to the multitude of arising issues. Perpetual operation of a network node is undoubtedly one of the major goals of any energy-aware protocol or power-efficient hardware platform. Energy harvesting has emerged as the natural way to keep small stationary hardware platforms running, even when operating continuously as network routing devices. This paper analyses solar radiation, wind and water flow as feasible energy sources that ...

The free amino acid profile of 18 samples of tronchuda cabbage (Brassica oleracea L. var. costata DC) leaves, harvested at three different months, was determined by HPLC/UV−vis. The tronchuda cabbage leaves total free amino acid content varied from 3.3 to 14.4 g/kg fresh weight. Generally, arginine was the major compound, followed by proline, threonine, glutamine, cysteine, and glutamic acid. This study indicates that free amino acids are not similarly distributed: in external leaves, proline and ...

Methods In this study, we evaluated DPYD promoter methylation through quantitative methylation-specific PCR and screened DPYD for large intragenic rearrangements in peripheral blood from 45 patients with gastrointestinal cancers who developed severe 5-FU toxicity. Jerusalem artichoke is commonly grown for its edible tubers, livestock feed and as an ornamental. The possibility of growing Jerusalem artichoke for energetic purposes has aroused scientific interest in this species. Nitrogen (N) and boron (B) are mobile elements in soil. Therefore, the application of these nutrients is typically performed annually, as a single dose, or even split into several fractions in the case of N. In olive (Olea europaea L.), however, controversial literature has suggested that yearly application of N may not be required. In the case of B, some authors indicated that one single application is sufficient for 3 or 4 years. Thus, the effects of these elements on olive yield, leaf N and B concentrations, ...
