This paper analyzes a differentiated duopoly model with cost uncertainty in an environment where information sharing is prohibited. The duopolists can commit themselves to be a Stackelberg leader or follower at the time when they know the distribution, but not the actual values, of their own and the rival's costs. In a natural Stackelberg situation, the firms agree on the assignment of roles and neither prefers the (Bayesian) Nash equilibrium. An natural Stackelberg situation is shown to be possible ...

A 140.2 m deep boring (BH 81/29) from the central North Sea (British sector) has been investigated for its foraminiferal content. Fourteen assemblage zones are identified, and these are correlated with other records from the North Sea region. The stratigraphical interpretation of BH 81/29 is supported by palaeomagnetic data and by amino acid dates and thermoluminescence dates from the same boring. Foraminiferal zones 14 to 8, from the bottom of the core, have been referred to the Early Pleistocene. ...

A series of bicylic 2′-deoxynucleosides that are locked in the N-type conformation due to three-carbon linkages between the 2′- and 4′-positions have been prepared by ring-closing diene or enyne metathesis. The alkene or 1,3-diene hereby introduced in the bicyclic system is further derivatized, the latter showing the expected potential for Diels−Alder reactions. Four derivatives that are saturated or unsaturated as well as functionalized at the 2′−4′-linkage are incorporated into oligodeoxynucleotides, ...

This study of journalists' 1961–2001 use of researchers in three national Danish daily newspapers identifies a dramatic and accelerating sevenfold increase in the number of articles referring to researchers—an increase that is related to a significant shift in which types of researchers are cited and for what purpose. Researchers communicate research results much less than they did in the past; instead, they increasingly serve as expert commentators on knowledge produced outside of research institutions, ...

Political science has abundantly proved that politics involves power, conflict, and self‐serving interests. Much less frequently does political science deal with ethics in public policymaking. This article analyses the appeal to moral principles in the political process of drafting three bills, all concerning homosexuals, in which the Danish parliamentary parties, in contrast to normal practice, allowed their members to deviate from the party line and vote in accordance with their ‘conscience’. Analysis ...

We strengthen the results in a paper by Bagwell and Ramey (International Journal of Industrial Organization, 1990, 8, 93–113) to show that under their assumptions no intuitive pooling equilibrium exists. It follows that a uniqueness result can be established under quite standard assumptions.

Hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1) is a transcription factor that plays a critical role in angiogenesis, survival, metastasis, drug resistance, and glucose metabolism. Elevated expression of the alpha-subunit of HIF-1 (HIF-1alpha), which occurs in response to hypoxia or activation of growth factor pathways, is associated with poor prognosis in many types of cancer. Therefore, down-regulation of HIF-1alpha protein by RNA antagonists may control cancer growth. EZN-2968 is a RNA antagonist composed of ...

Abstract The ability to regulate the cellular homeostasis of a higher organism through tight control of apoptosis and cell division is crucial for life. Dysregulation of these mechanisms is often associated with cancerous phenotypes in cells. Optimal cancer therapy is a fine balance between effective cancer cell killing and at the same time minimizing, or avoiding, damage to the surrounding healthy tissue. To obtain this, it is necessary to identify and inhibit molecular targets on which the cancer ...

A number of modern impellers have been designed in the pursuit of an alternative to the traditional Rushton turbine, which has a number of well recognized deficiencies. A dual up-pumping combination of the Hayward Tyler B2 (former APV-B2 or simply B2), a high solidity ratio hydrofoil impeller, was retrofitted using traditional methods to a pilot scale fermentor based on cited reference studies of the impeller performance. Using water as a media and comparatively low power draws, the B2 impeller has ...

Abstract Previous research has shown that a party's election results can depend on visibility and tone in the media. Using daily content data from the major news bulletins and daily survey data from the 2007 national election campaign in Denmark (N = 5,083), our analysis improves upon two central aspects of this earlier research. First, the effects on vote choice of the parties' visibility and tone in the media are studied concurrently in the same model. Second, a distinction is made between the effects ...

Political parties have substantial influence on which issues the news media cover during election campaigns, while the media have limited influence on party agendas. However, we know little about why some parties are more successful than others in passing the media’s gates and being covered on sponsored issues. On the basis of content analyses of election news coverage (812 news stories) and press releases published by political parties (N = 334) during the 2007 national election campaign in Denmark, ...

Abstract This article represents one of the first attempts to study agenda setting and policy processes in a cross-national perspective, and we do so by examining the issue of tobacco consumption in Denmark and the United States over the last half-century. There are similarities in the ways that the political systems have responded. In both countries political attention has been rising, and so has the number of measures to control tobacco consumption. There are also striking differences, however. ...

The triplex-forming abilities of some conformationally restricted nucleotide analogs are disclosed and compared herein. 2′-Amino-LNA monomers proved to be less stabilising to triplexes than LNA monomers when incorporated into a triplex-forming third strand. N2′-functionalisation of 2′-amino-LNA monomers with a glycyl unit induced the formation of exceptionally stable triplexes. Nucleotide analogs containing a C2′,C3′-oxymethylene linker (E-type furanose conformation) or a C2′,C4′-propylene linker ( ...

Modeling biotechnological processes is key to obtaining increased productivity and efficiency. Particularly crucial to successful modeling of such systems is the coupling of the physical transport phenomena and the biological activity in one model. We have applied a model for the expression of cellulosic enzymes by the filamentous fungus Trichoderma reesei and found excellent agreement with experimental data. The most influential factor was demonstrated to be viscosity and its influence on mass ...

The relation between journalistic role conceptions and news content is central for the understanding of differences in journalistic cultures. Previous research has shown that the professional roles of individual journalists can influence their behaviour and that occupational socialization leads to similar role conceptions within countries. This article therefore studies the relation between cross-national differences in role conceptions and news content. A survey among political journalists in Denmark, ...

Abstract The purpose of this article is to demonstrate how a model can be constructed such that the progress of a submerged fed‐batch fermentation of a filamentous fungus can be predicted with acceptable accuracy. The studied process was enzyme production with Aspergillus oryzae in 550 L pilot plant stirred tank reactors. Different conditions of agitation and aeration were employed as well as two different impeller geometries. The limiting factor for the productivity was oxygen supply to the fermentation ...

The article investigates why journalists choose to use experts as sources in their news coverage and the nature of the interaction of experts and journalists. During a month-long period in 2003, both journalists and experts were contacted on the day a news article appearing in one of the three largest national Danish newspapers referred to experts. In the vast majority of the cases, the contact comes as the result of initiatives taken by the journalists (approximately 90% of the cases), not the other ...

Critics claim that journalists spread a cynical view of politics, as their relation with politicians is characterized by mistrust and hyper-adversarialism. To gain an insight into how cynical journalists themselves are about politics and how this can be explained, this article investigates the role relationship between politicians and journalists in four European countries with different political communication systems. The empirical basis for the study is a survey of over 400 political reporters ...

European and American guidelines for vaccination against tetanus and influenza in horses recommend annual and annual/semi-annual vaccinations, respectively, against the two pathogens. Too-frequent vaccination may, however, have adverse effects, among other things because an inflammatory response is elicited with subsequent alterations in homeostasis. The objective of the study was to compare the acute phase response (APR) in 10 horses following administration of two different types of vaccines, namely, ...
