A tumorlike condition of the pleura is any nonmalignant lesion of the pleura or within the pleural space that could be confused with a pleural tumor on initial imaging. Tumorlike conditions of the pleura are relatively rare compared with neoplastic lesions such as mesotheliomas and metastases. Imaging-based diagnosis of these conditions can be difficult due to the similarity of appearance. Thus, recognition of certain imaging patterns and interpretation of these patterns in the clinical context ...

The objective of this work was to report the tomographic findings in five cases of intrathoracic textilomas. The CT scans of five patients presenting with textilomas after being submitted to thoracotomy for myocardial revascularisation were reviewed retrospectively. Two chest radiologists studied the scans independently, and decisions concerning the CT findings were made by consensus. In each of the five cases, the imaging findings were similar and showed lesions resembling an extrapulmonary mass ...

OBJECTIVE: To determine the frequency of HRCT findings and their distribution in the lung parenchyma of patients with organizing pneumonia. METHODS: This was a retrospective review of the HRCT scans of 36 adult patients (26 females and 10 males) with biopsy-proven organizing pneumonia. The patients were between 19 and 82 years of age (mean age, 56.2 years). The HRCT images were evaluated by two independent observers, discordant interpretations being resolved by consensus. RESULTS: The most common ...

AbstractObjective: To evaluate HRCT scans of the chest in 22 patients with cocaine-induced pulmonary disease. Methods: We included patients between 19 and 52 years of age. The HRCT scans were evaluated by two radiologists independently, discordant results being resolved by consensus. The inclusion criterion was an HRCT scan showing abnormalities that were temporally related to cocaine use, with no other apparent causal factors. Results:In 8 patients (36.4%), the clinical and tomographic findings were ...

Background: Zenker's diverticulum is a rare disease in the general population. Its treatment can be carried out by either an endoscopic or surgical approach. The objective of this study was to systematically identify all reports that compare both treatment modalities and to assess the outcomes in terms of length of procedure, length of hospitalization, time until diet introduction, complication rates, and recurrence rates. Methods: A search of Medline and Embase selected all studies that compared different ...

Metastatic pulmonary calcification (MPC) is a subdiagnosed metabolic lung disease that is commonly associated with end-stage renal disease. This interstitial process is characterized by the deposition of calcium salts predominantly in the alveolar epithelial basement membranes. MPC is seen at autopsy in 60–75% of patients with renal failure. It is often asymptomatic, but can potentially progress to respiratory failure. Chest radiographs are frequently normal or demonstrate confluent or patchy airspace ...

To achieve high corn yield, optimal amounts of nutrients that can be extracted by the crop must be supplied at adequate proportions. Vinasse from sugarcane ethanol production can be applied as a soil fertilizer to corn crops in ethanol production plants. In this context, the present study compared the effects of mineral potassium fertilization with potassium chloride and organic fertilization with concentrated sugarcane vinasse on corn dry matter and grain yield and explored the technical and economic ...

The lectin from the seeds of Canavalia ensiformis (ConA) and Dioclea guianensis (DguiL) was tested upon its renal effects using the isolated perfusion rat kidney method. Both lectins (10μg/ml) affected perfusion pressure and renal vascular resistance, but DguiL showed a much greater action than ConA. However, ConA, but not DguiL, affected potassium tubular transport.

This study evaluated the performance, body water balance, ingestive behavior and blood metabolites in goats fed with cactus pear silage subjected to an intermittent water supply. Thirty-six goats were distributed in a randomized block design arranged as a 3 × 3 factorial with cactus pear silage in the goats’ diet (on a 0%, 21% and 42% dry matter-DM basis) and water offer frequency (ad libitum, and 24 and 48 h water restrictions). There was an interaction only between the cactus pear silage level and ...

Amyloidosis is a constellation of disease entities characterized by abnormal extracellular deposition and accumulation of protein and protein derivatives, which show apple-green birefringence when stained with Congo red and viewed under polarized light. Amyloid can infiltrate virtually all organ systems and can display multiple and diverse imaging findings. Pathologically, respiratory involvement occurs in 50 % of patients with amyloidosis, and its clinical signs and symptoms vary depending on whether ...

This study developed a new version of the Resident Empowerment through Tourism Scale - the RETS 2.0 by integrating two new dimensions of empowerment – economic and environmental empowerment – that the original RETS left off. The RETS 2.0 also abbreviates the original RETS to three items per a construct, reducing response burden, and opening up space for measuring different antecedents and outcomes of empowerment. The RETS 2.0 was empirically tested and validated in the small island destinations of Boa ...

Congenital pulmonary lymphangiectasia is a rare disease characterized by dilation of lymphatic channels without lymphatic proliferation. The disease is seen almost exclusively in infancy and early childhood. The authors report 2 cases of pulmonary lymphangiectasia. The patients were a 12- and a 25-year-old male who presented with progressive dyspnea and hemoptysis. The diagnosis was confirmed by open lung biopsy. The radiographic findings consisted of bilateral reticular changes, peribronchial cuffing, ...

Andira anthelmia (tribe Dalbergieae), a plant from Brazilian Amazon, possesses a seed lectin that was purified by affinity chromatography in sepharose-mannose. This novel Dalbergieae lectin, named AAL, agglutinated rabbit erythrocytes treated with trypsin. The hemagglutinating activity of AAL was maintained after incubation at a wide range of temperature (40 to 70 °C) and pH, was shown to be dependent on divalent cations, and was inhibited by d-mannose and d-sucrose. AAL showed an electrophoretic profile ...

One of the ways to produce biodiesel is through fatty acid esterification via heterogeneous catalysis. The water treatment plants in Manaus - Amazonas/Brazil produce about 20 tons of sludge per day. In order to establish an application to this abundant waste as a new heterogeneous catalyst, acid and heat treatments were performed and characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, surface area, and scanning electron microscopy. Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis is the etiologic agent of caseous lymphadenitis (CL), a chronic disease that affects goats and sheep. CL is characterized by the formation of granulomas in lymph nodes and other organs, such as the lungs and liver. The particle‐growth kinetics of sodium niobate and zirconium titanate powders that were processed by the polymeric precursors method were studied. The growth kinetics that were studied for the particle, in the final stage of crystallization, showed that the growth process occurs in two different stages. For temperatures <800°C, the particle‐growth mechanism is associated with surface diffusion, with an activation energy in the range of 40‐80 kJ/mol. For temperatures >800°C, particle growth is controlled ...
