Background. Azacitidine (AZA) and venetoclax (VEN) combination is approved in previously untreated acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients ineligible to intensive chemotherapy (IC). However, AZA-VEN is associated with toxicities that often requires dose reduction (or discontinuation) and may limit triplet combination tolerance. In our study, we evaluated efficacy and toxicity of VEN exposure reduction by limiting VEN intake to the concurrent days of AZA administration (7+7 scheme). Methods. We retrospectively ...

Abstract Background As new lymphatic filariasis infections are eliminated through mass chemotherapy, previously affected individuals are left with the sequellae, especially chronic progressive lymphoedema. Currently this is managed by careful attention to limb hygiene to prevent infection. Studies over the past 15 years have suggested that the incorporation of doxycycline treatment may arrest or even reverse progression of lymphoedema. Most of this work has been observational or based on small studies, ...

The best predictors of short- and medium-term mortality of cirrhotic patients receiving intensive care support are unknown. We conducted meta-analyses from 13 studies (2523 cirrhotics) after selection of original articles and response to a standardized questionnaire by the corresponding authors. End-points were in-ICU, in-hospital, and 6-month mortality in ICU survivors. A total of 301 pooled analyses, including 95 analyses restricted to 6-month mortality among ICU survivors, were conducted considering ...

Arrays of ultrathin Pt/Co(0.5 nm)/Pt nano-platelets with lateral sizes ranging from 30 nm to 1 µm have been patterned by focused ion beam (FIB) lithography under a weak Ga(+) ion fluence. From polar magneto-optical Kerr microscopy it is demonstrated that nano-platelets are ferromagnetic with perpendicular anisotropy down to a size of 50 nm. The irradiation process creates a magnetically soft ring at the nano-platelet periphery in which domain nucleation is initiated at a low field. The magnetization ...

This paper describes the development of a new aromatic-based binder for powder injection molding (PIM) reactive metals, such as titanium, zirconium, niobium, tungsten, and molybdenum. Detailed processing results are discussed for titanium alloy (Ti-6,4) compacts fabricated using the new binder system. Because of the choice of the binder constituents, thermal removal is readily accomplished at low temperatures and short times via vacuum sublimation. In this way the binder can be cleanly extracted from ...

Members of the MyoD family of helix-loop-helix proteins control expression of the muscle phenotype by regulating the activity of subordinate genes. To investigate processes that control the expression of myogenic factors and regulate the establishment and maintenance of the skeletal muscle phenotype, we have analyzed sequences necessary for transcription of the maternally expressed Xenopus MyoD (XMyoD) gene. A 3.5-kb DNA fragment containing the XMyoDa promoter was expressed in a somite-specific manner ...

End-tidal Pco2 (Petco2) is a quantitative indicator of pulmonary blood flow generated by precordial compression and therefore predicts resuscitability during CPR. A striking increase in Petco2 follows return of spontaneous circulation. Since Paco2 is closely related to alveolar Pco2 (Paco2) and therefore Petco2, we hypothesized that Paco2 may itself serve as an indicator of the blood flow generated during CPR. In a porcine model of cardiac arrest, Paco2 during precordial compression was highly correlated ...

James Leavy, M H Weil, Eric C. Rackow,

The measurement of arterial blood lactate concentration for the purpose of estimating the severity and prognosis of acute perfusion failure is suspect because of theoretical errors due to systemic "lactate washout" immediately following restoration of perfusion. If arterial lactate concentrations continue to increase following resuscitation, the assumption that increasing lactate concentrations indicate progression of anaerobiosis due to perfusion failure would be invalidated. Lactate washout was ...

Terminal differentiation of skeletal myoblasts is accompanied by induction of a series of tissue-specific gene products, which includes the muscle isoenzyme of creatine kinase (MCK). To begin to define the sequences and signals involved in MCK regulation in developing muscle cells, the mouse MCK gene has been isolated. Sequence analysis of 4,147 bases of DNA surrounding the transcription initiation site revealed several interesting structural features, some of which are common to other muscle-specific ...
