This review assesses the potential applications of alkali-activated silico-manganese slag (SiMnS). It covers four main sections: (i) the characteristics of SiMnS, (ii) its use as cementitious materials, (iii) its use as an alkali-activated precursor, and (iv) environmental perspectives. SiMnS shows promise as an alkali-activated material with diverse applications in civil construction. Future prospects include their use in heavy metal immobilization, understanding rheological behavior for effective admixture ...

A voltammetric procedure optimized by experimental design for glyphosate determination in soil, water and vegetable samples is described. The voltammetry experiments were performed using a hanging mercury drop electrode (HMDE). The DPV variables involved in the optimization process were: voltage step, pulse amplitude, pulse interval, voltage step time and concentration of the supporting electrolyte. A full 2 5 factorial design was chosen to evaluate these effects. From the results obtained by the ...

Industrial processes such as the extraction and processing of building and dimension stone and the manufacturing of ferroalloys generate large amounts of waste, which can cause environmental damage. Therefore, the development of new techniques for recycling and reusing industrial waste would be useful for minimizing the environmental impacts of these activities. This paper presents the incorporation of soapstone powder and Fe–Si–Mn slag in clay–lime brick as a partial substitution for agglomerate ( ...

The use of plant growth-promoting diazotrophic bacteria as an alternative to increase nitrogen (N) availability and contribute to its use by corn can be a less costly and ecologically more viable option. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of the inoculation with Azospirillum brasilense and Herbaspirillum seropedicae in association with N fertilization on the N use efficiency and its biological fixation by corn, in field conditions, using the 15N-isotope technique. This study aimed to evaluate the use of cross-linked cationic starch and pregelatinized cationic starch as flocculants in the sedimentation of iron ore tailing slime seeking a less toxic and less expensive alternative when compared with the use of polyacrylamide. The characterization of a sample from the slimes thickener’s feed indicated the presence of hematite, quartz and kaolinite, with about 50% of the particles below 10 μm. Samples of minerals of majority presence (hematite and quartz) were ...

The production of waste from the mining-metallurgical sector is one of the factors of environmental contamination and exploring ways to reuse this waste have attracted considerable research attention. This study proposes the use of residues generated from the manufacturing processes of ferromanganese alloy and soapstone powder for the production of red ceramic. Ceramic bricks were prepared with clay and sludge to investigate the effect of a number of variables, including the replacement of clay ...

Iron ore tailings dams at Quadrilátero Ferrífero, Minas Gerais (MG), Brazil, are full and present significant risks. The material contains approximately 30% of the iron, and recovering this iron is important in decreasing the environmental impact and increasing production. Sporotrichosis is caused by Sporothrix schenckii. The cat is the animal species most affected by this mycosis and plays an important role in the zoonotic transmission of this disease. The definitive diagnosis is made by isolation of the fungus in culture; however, cytopathological examination is frequently used in cats. Medical records from cats treated at Instituto de Pesquisa Clínica Evandro Chagas/Fiocruz, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, between 2004 and 2006 were reviewed. Criteria for inclusion were ...

Leprosy transmission still occurs despite the availability of highly effective treatment. The next step towards successfully eliminating leprosy is interrupting the chain of transmission of the aetiological agent, Mycobacterium leprae. In this investigation, we provide evidence that household contacts (HHCs) of leprosy patients might not only have subclinical infections, but may also be actively involved in bacilli transmission. We studied 444 patients and 1,352 contacts using anti-phenolic glycolipid- ...

Feline sporotrichosis is an endemic disease in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where zoonotic transmission of Sporothrix spp. has been reported since 1998. Itraconazole (ITZ) remains the first choice for treating this disease in cats. However, there have been reports of therapeutic failure and a long-term endeavor. Potassium iodide (KI), considered in the past as a drug with variable effectiveness in cats with sporotrichosis, arises as an important option in the treatment of cats from the endemic area of ...

Most of the 51 species embedded in the genus Sporothrix are nonpathogenic environmental fungi that are closely related to decaying wood, plants, and soil. However, members of the Sporothrix schenckii complex are highly successful mammal pathogens, including S. brasiliensis, S. schenckii sensu stricto (s. str.), S. globosa, and S. luriei, the causative agents of human and animal sporotrichosis [1]. Their key to success during mammal infection lies at least in part with their ability to change from ...

Feline sporotrichosis due to Sporothrix brasiliensis is frequently severe and often correlated to zoonotic transmission. Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) and Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) cause immunodeficiency in cats; no association has been identified with critical cases of sporotrichosis. Moreover, the cytokine profile in Sporothrix-infected cats and a potential impact of retrovirus co-infections on their immunity is unknown. Feline sporotrichosis is caused by pathogenic fungi in the genus Sporothrix. In Brazil, the most prevalent agent and primary pathogen of feline sporotrichosis is Sporothrix brasiliensis (Rodrigues et al. 2013). The disease usually ranges from a single skin lesion that can progress to multiple skin lesions and fatal systemic involvement. Nodules and ulcers are the most common skin lesions, and respiratory signs and nasal mucosa involvement occur frequently (Gremião et al. 2015). Currently, there are ...
