Florence, Bibliotheca Medici Laurenziana, MS Plut. 78.19 is a twelfthcentury Irish manuscript containing a copy of Boethius's Consolatio Philosophiae. It also contains some 5,000 glosses, of which 28 are in Irish. These Irish glosses are edited here for the first time, with accompanying commentary, an analysis of the different strata in which they are grouped, and further discussions of their content and function, relationship to the Latin glosses, date, and significance. An index of the Irish words ...

Gregory Toner,

This paper explores the ways in which Irish scholars of the eleventh and twelfth centuries used verse to evaluate the veracity of accounts of the past. Verse was widely employed as a medium for encoding and transmitting historical knowledge and later scholars frequently cite earlier verse to authorise and authenticate their own work. It is argued here that certain compositions were considered authoritative and were used to refute competing accounts of the past; others lacked authority and were themselves ...

VARIA V Gaulish souxtu:addendum In a previous publication I proposed to compare a Gaulish word souxtu, the name of a particular sort of vase, with OI suacht, used for translating olla 'cooking pot'.1Amongst possible comparanda,I suggested Modern Scottish suacan 'melting-pot, crucible'. I overlooked the existence of a British cognate, attested in only one document: the same word souxtum appears in aVindolanda letter published in 1994and written (probably in AD 103or a little earlier) by Seuerus to his ...

In a keynote address at the XI. Fachtagung der Indogermanischen Gesellschaft, about possible non-Indo-European influence on the Celtic languages, Kim McCone drew attention to the similarity between the Insular Celtic, e.g. OIr fannall, W gwennol, and the Basque,i.e. enara, ain(h)- ara, words for 'swallow' (Lat hirundo). McCone reconstructs *waNilri or *weNrilri as preforms for the Insular Celtic words, and *(w)aiNala for Pre- Basque (McCone 2005,408-9).l This suggestion looks very attractive and suggestive ...

Aaron Griffith,

A previously unknown restriction on the notae augentes in Old Irish is demonstrated here: the appearance of a nota augens after a verb containing an infixed pronoun is governed by a rigid and exceptionless hierarchy that is sensitive to the person of the subject and object, as well as to whether the subject and object are human or non-human. It is further demonstrated that the notae augentes of the third person refer (almost) exclusively to humans.

Gregory Toner,

This paper provides new literary analyses of two tales associated with Emain Macha, both of which feature a woman called Macha: Noínden Ulad, which purports to tell the origin of the debility that the Ulstermen suffered during the Táin, and the story of Macha Mongruad, who overthrew her enemies and forced them to construct the fort of Emain Macha. The discussion considers issues of warriorhood, justice and gender, and seeks to disentangle the themes of sovereignty and war in relation to the women ...

PÁDRAIC MORAN,

While the Irish knowledge of Greek in the early Middle Ages has been much debated, the evidence of Irish language texts has been largely ignored. Early Irish glossaries (O'Mulconry's Glossary, Sanas Cormaic, Dull Dromma Cetta) cite at least 190 Greek words, and this presents an opportunity to study some sources for Greek available in Ireland. This article looks at the evidence of the glossaries for the pronunciation of Greek in particular. In doing so, it aims to clarify the extent to which Greek ...

Elliott Lash,

The words etar and ceta have a first syllable with a variable vowel: either e (e-variant) or i (i-variant). This paper investigates the diachronic distribution of these two variants. The innovation of the i-variants occurred by the eighth century at the latest in ‘pretonic complexes’: preverbal and prenominal proclitic strings consisting of more than one element (for instance: preverb + relative mutation/pronoun, for example a n-itir·n-ūara ‘when it cools’ Ml. 71b5, or preposition + article, for instance ...
