Two square planar derivatives of Pt(en)Cl2 with intrinsic fluorescence in aqueous solution at room temperature, with quantum yields (Φ) 0.11 and 0.10, respectively, have been synthesized and characterized as [Pt(en)(CG)Cl] (Complex 1) and [Pt(en)(CG)2] (Complex 2) (en = ethylenediamine, CG = cholylglycinate). Complexes 1 and 2 exchange just one ligand (chloride or cholylglycinate, respectively) when reacted with water or 5'-GMP to give the same chemical species. After reaction with DNA oligonucleotides or ...

Flow cytometric immunophenotyping has become essential for accurate diagnosis, classification, and disease monitoring in hemato-oncology. The EuroFlow Consortium has established a fully standardized "all-in-one" pipeline consisting of standardized instrument settings, reagent panels, and sample preparation protocols and software for data analysis and disease classification. For its reproducible implementation, parallel development of a quality assurance (QA) program was required. Here, we report on ...

Abstract An assessment is made of the influence of convective effects in the behaviour of calalyst pellets with large pores Concentration profiles and effectiveness factors are calculated for zero order reactions in isothermal regimes using a model which involves convective transport as well as diffusion and reaction processes in the pellet Errors made in current reactor design are discussed. A predictive method for calculating the intraparticle fluid velocity in industrial cases is reported. Finally, ...

Microarrays constitute a new platform which allows the discovery and characterization of proteins. According to different features, such as content, surface or detection system, there are many types of protein microarrays which can be applied for the identification of disease biomarkers and the characterization of protein expression patterns. However, the analysis and interpretation of the amount of information generated by microarrays remain a challenge. Further data analysis strategies are essential ...

The surface chemistry of a commercial activated carbon has been selectively modified, without changing significantly its textural properties, by means of chemical treatments, using HNO3, H2O2, NH3, and thermal treatments under a flow of H2 or N2. The resultant samples were characterized in terms of their surface chemistry and textural properties, and subsequently tested in the removal of different classes of dyes. It was shown that the surface chemistry of the activated carbon plays a key role in ...

The adsorption of model aromatic compounds (phenol, aniline, nitrobenzene) on modified activated carbons has been investigated. Electrostatic and dispersive adsorbate/adsorbent interactions are involved in this process. Their influence on the uptake of the above mentioned aromatic compounds has been evaluated using different solution pH conditions and activated carbon samples with different surface chemistries. These samples were obtained by modification of a commercial activated carbon by means ...

Several metal oxides, as well as metal oxides supported on activated carbon, were assessed as ozonation catalysts for the removal of selected organic compounds. Two transition metals (Mn, Co) and one rare earth element (Ce) were chosen for the preparation of the two series of catalysts. These materials were used in the ozonation of two aromatic compounds (aniline and sulfanilic acid) and one textile azo dye (CI Acid Blue 113). The results were compared with those obtained with non-catalytic ozonation. ...

The oxidation of hazardous organic compounds leads to the formation of several by-products, being oxalic acid and oxamic acid final oxidation products refractory to ozonation. The present work aimed to study the ozonation of those carboxylic acids in the presence of activated carbon at different solution pH. For comparative purposes, experiments of adsorption on activated carbon, ozonation, and ozonation in the presence of activated carbon were carried out. In order to clarify the reaction mechanism, ...

Abstract The DNA content per diploid nucleus (2 C-value) was determined for the eight species of Iberian salamanders by flow cytometry. All species showed high values, which are characteristic of Caudata. The species with the lowest value was Pleurodeles waltl (48.25 pg DNA/cell) and Salamandra salamandra had the highest values (70.55 pg DNA/cell). There were no statistical differences between sexes in any of the eight species and DNA content was not directly related with phylogeny. The values obtained ...

Cisplatin is one of the chemotherapeutic agents used the most for testicular, ovarian and several other cancers. In order to overcome cisplatin resistance, other platinum (Pt) compounds have been developed and, in the last ten years, Pt-derivatives with reporting activity have also been synthesized. The first generation of reporting Pt-compounds was based on linking a fluorescent molecule (e.g. cyanine) to cisplatin, but more recent studies have focused on strategies to synthesize intrinsically fluorescent ...

Abstract The kinetics of processes involving solids may be determined from experiments under non‐isothermal conditions. On analyzing data by integral methods, it is necessary to calculate the temperature integral, which does not have an analytical solution. Instead of performing the numerical integration, most of the researchers prefer to circumvent the problem by using approximate expressions, not always adequate. The widespread use of inaccurate approximations does not contribute to a coherent ...

The main goal of this work is the study of the relationship between the surface chemical characteristics of activated carbon and the performance of the respective gold-supported catalysts in the oxidation of glycerol. For that purpose, a set of modified activated carbons with different levels of oxygenated functional groups on the surface, but with no major differences in their textural parameters, was prepared. A strong effect of the activated carbon surface chemistry on the catalytic activity ...

Nitrogen-free and nitrogen-doped carbon xerogel materials, from urea and melamine precursors, were prepared at different pH and evaluated as adsorbents/catalysts in the removal of phenol. Then, zero-valent iron (ZVI) was supported on these carbon xerogel materials and its activity was again evaluated for phenol removal by adsorption and catalytic wet peroxide oxidation (CWPO). Sporadic Colorectal Cancer (sCRC) is the third leading cause of cancer death in the Western world, and the sCRC patients presenting with synchronic metastasis have the poorest prognosis. Genetic alterations accumulated in sCRC tumor cells translate into mutated proteins and/or abnormal protein expression levels, which contribute to the development of sCRC. Then, the tumor-associated proteins (TAAs) might induce the production of auto-antibodies (aAb) via humoral immune response. Here, Nucleic Acid ...

Ni nanoparticles and filamentous carbon were generated simultaneously by decomposing methane over Raney nickel catalyst. Nickel nanoparticles were stabilized by filamentous carbon. The Ni–filamentous carbon composite materials were tested as catalysts for the hydrogenation of ortho- and para-chloronitrobenzene, producing chloroanilines selectively (99% yield). The catalysts exclusively reduce the nitro group in chloronitrobenzenes, leaving the C–Cl bond untouched. A possible explanation for this ...

The oxidation of toluene over a cryptomelane (K-OMS-2) catalyst was investigated at temperatures between 100 and 300 °C. The catalyst was tested both in temperature-programmed experiments (light-off curves) and in isothermal tests. The carbonaceous deposits retained in the porous structure after the isothermal tests were evaluated by temperature-programmed oxidation. The results show that gradual deactivation occurs at temperatures below 268 °C (which corresponds to the peak maximum in the TPO curves). ...
