Skin cancer is one of the most severe diseases, and medical imaging is among the main tools for cancer diagnosis. The images provide information on the evolutionary stage, size, and location of tumor lesions. This paper focuses on the classification of skin lesion images considering a framework of four experiments to analyze the classification performance of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) in distinguishing different skin lesions. The CNNs are based on transfer learning, taking advantage of ...

Habitat loss is the leading cause of the global decline in biodiversity, but the influence of human pressure within the matrix surrounding habitat fragments remains poorly understood. Here, we measure the relationship between fragmentation (the degree of fragmentation and the degree of patch isolation), matrix condition (measured as the extent of high human footprint levels), and the change in extinction risk of 4,426 terrestrial mammals. We find that the degree of fragmentation is strongly associated ...

The mechanism(s) underlying the effects of L-carnitine (beta-hydroxy-gamma-N-trimethylammonium-butyrate; LC) in cardiovascular diseases are not well clarified. Previous studies have demonstrated that oxidative stress and inflammation contribute to arterial hypertension, and antioxidant and/or anti-inflammatory therapies have been proposed. We hypothesized that LC might attenuate the hypertensive status through an inhibition of inflammation process.Heart mRNA expression and plasma levels of inflammatory ...

Quercus crassifolia H. & B. and Quercus crassipes H. & B. are two common temperate forest species in Mexico that form hybrids when they occur in mixed (sympatric) areas. In this study, we used chloroplast microsatellite haplotypes to infer phylogeographic patterns onto the genetic structure of populations of both parental species, thus defining probable colonization routes throughout Mexico. Haplotype diversity in seven hybrid zones and four allopatric sites with nonmixed (allopatric) populations of both ...

Abstract Background Prader–Willi syndrome (PWS) is associated with a characteristic behavioural phenotype whose main features are, alongside compulsive hyperphagia, deficits in social behaviour: social withdrawal, temper tantrums, perseverative speech and behaviour, mental rigidity, stereotyped behaviour, impulsiveness, etc. Similar symptoms may also be found in autistic spectrum disorders and lesional pathologies of the frontal lobe. In both cases, such symptoms have been related to dysfunctions ...

Abstract A polyphasic characterization of atypical isolates of Yersinia ruckeri (causative agent of enteric redmouth disease in trout) obtained from hatchery‐reared brown trout Salmo trutta in South Carolina was performed. The Y. ruckeri isolates were biochemically and genetically distinct from reference cultures, including the type strain, but were unequivocally ascribed to the species Y. ruckeri , based on API 20E, VITEK, fatty acid methyl ester profiles, and 16S rRNA gene sequencing analysis. In this communication a reflector antenna is presented as a feasible solution for Local to Multipoint Distribution System base station with a reconfigurable number of sectorial beams. The antenna is an improved version of the hourglass reflector antenna with a shaped profile to obtain a cosecant-squared elevation pattern, and with a feed array which is designed to achieve adequate and reconfigurable beamwidth in the horizontal plane.

The aim of this work is to present the ICARA (induced-current analysis of reflector antennas) software, which is able to predict the behavior of reflector antennas using the physical optics method. The software offers different options for antenna configurations, single and array feed models, and far-field or aperture-field analysis.

Abstract In this work we report on thermopower S(T) and electrical resistivity ρ(T) measurements performed on La1−xSrxMnO3 (x = 0.2, 0.3) ceramic samples, obtained by cold compaction and sintering of mechanically alloyed nanocrystalline powders. The samples studied in this work display grain sizes between d ∼ 70 nm and O(2 μm). The effects induced by the nanostructure on the thermoelectric and electrical properties in the paramagnetic state have been studied and discussed in terms of current theories ...

Lateral trunk flexion is often seen in patients with Parkinson disease, sometimes coming on as a subacute phenomenon associated with medication adjustments, and in others with gradual onset that seems related to a neurodegenerative process related to the evolution of the disease. Either acute or subacute presentations seem to be pure abnormalities in the coronal plane and are usually reversible. However, a chronic form occurs often in a combined fashion with anteroposterior flexion (camptocormia), ...

Claudia Arias, Oscar A. Ramos,

Four psychoacoustic tests were designed in order to study the human echolocation ability, i.e. the process of auditive perception of obstacles without the use of vision. The tests measure the subjects' performance in repetition pitch detection and discrimination tasks — which are supposed to be involved in the short distance echolocation modality — using an echolocation paradigm as sound stimulus. The results, based on an experience, carried out with 30 sighted subjects with and without musical training ...
