Objectives Cleft lip and/or palate is a common congenital craniofacial malformation found worldwide. A frequently associated disorder is conductive hearing loss, and this disorder has been thoroughly investigated in children with non-syndromic cleft lip and/or palate (NSCL/P). However, analysis of auditory processing function is rarely reported for this population, although this issue should not be ignored since abnormal auditory cortical structures have been found in populations with cleft disorders. ...

The brain's electrical response to transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is known to be influenced by exogenous factors such as the frequency and intensity of stimulation and the orientation and positioning of the stimulating coil. Less understood, however, is the influence of endogenous neural factors, such as global brain state, on the TMS-evoked response (TMS-ER). In the present study, we explored how changes in behavioral state affect the TMS-ER by perturbing the superior parietal lobule (SPL) ...

Vaccination provides a safe and effective means of reducing the risk of laboratory-acquired infection due to some Neisseria meningitidis serogroups. However, there is currently no serogroup B meningococcal vaccine licensed for use in the US. We used an investigational N. meningitidis serogroup B outer membrane vesicle (B:15:P1.7,16) vaccine produced by the National Institute of Public Health (NIPH) in Norway to immunize 20 researchers with occupational risk for disease. Three doses of vaccine were ...

This study aimed to examine differences in motivational regulations and achievement goal orientations between Masters athletes who do and do not have a coach. Elite Masters athletes (N = 71) were surveyed at the Canadian and USA Masters Track and Field Championships. The Sport Motivation Scale (Pelletier et al., 1995) and Task and Ego Orientation in Sport Questionnaire (Duda & Nicholls, 1992) assessed motivational regulations and achievement goals, respectively. For motivational regulations, multiple analyses ...

ABSTRACT Connecting the gas in H ii regions to the underlying source of the ionizing radiation can help us constrain the physical processes of stellar feedback and how H ii regions evolve over time. With PHANGS–MUSE, we detect nearly 24 000 H ii regions across 19 galaxies and measure the physical properties of the ionized gas (e.g. metallicity, ionization parameter, and density). We use catalogues of multiscale stellar associations from PHANGS–HST to obtain constraints on the age of the ionizing ...

For many years, sociologists have conceptualized and debated the value of ‘social capital’, the resources embedded in an actor's social network. The notions of network organizations and strategic alliances have become important forms of entrepreneurial venture, yet often the value in these networks is veiled by network complexity. These associations of individuals and organizations are typically undocumented, difficult to identify by third parties, and even pass unrecognized by their constituent ...

The enduring effects of the March 2011 tsunami and nuclear meltdown at the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Station in Japan are explored in this paper through the notions of “geo-trauma” in the authors’ work and geophilosophy in Deleuze and Guattari’s philosophy. At the fulcrum of the 2011 global disaster was the nuclear meltdown and the emittance of radioactive material such as Caesium-137 and Strontium-90. This event mattered and matters, dispersing and deterritorializing organic, non-organic, ...

In this paper, we propose different definitions of coaching excellence based on two principles. First, the application of coaching skill, as in any other domain of excellence, is context-dependent. Second, excellent coaches are knowledgeable and constantly assemble mental models that enable them to meet their athletes’ needs and to effectively manage the central duties of coaching – organization, training, and competition. Four categories of coaches and corresponding definitions are proposed based ...
