Using the disc instability model for dwarf novae and soft X-ray transients, we investigate the stability of accretion discs in long-period binary systems. We simulate outbursts due to this thermal-viscous instability for two symbiotic systems, RS~Ophiuchi and Z~Andromedae. The outburst properties deduced from our simulations suggest that, although the recurrent nova events observed in RS~Oph are due to a thermonuclear runaway at the white dwarf surface, these runaways are triggered by accretion ...

Extensive differential time-series CCD photometry has been carried out between 2003 and 2009 for the high-amplitude δ Scuti (HADS) star GP And. We acquired 12,583 new measurements consisting of 41 nights (153.3 hr) spanning over 2221 days. This is the largest time-series data set to date for the star. Based upon these data and others available in the literature, a comprehensive analysis has been conducted to investigate the pulsational properties of the star. Except for the known fundamental period ...

We have determined improved spectroscopic orbits for three double-lined binaries, 66 And (F4 V), HR 6979 (Am), and HR 9059 (F5 IV) using radial velocities from the 2.1 m telescope at McDonald Observatory, the coudé feed telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory, and 2 m telescope at Fairborn Observatory. The orbital periods range from 11.0 to 14.3 days, and all three systems have eccentric orbits. The new orbital dimensions (a1 sin i and a2 sin i) and minimum masses (m1 sin3 i and m2 sin3 i) have accuracies ...

We present new long-term CCD photometry for EP And acquired during the period 2007–2012. The light curves display total eclipses at primary minima and season-to-season light variability. Our synthesis for all available light curves indicates that the eclipsing pair is a W-type overcontact binary with parameters of q = 2.578, i = 833, ΔT = 27 K, f = 28%, and l3 = 2%–3%. The asymmetric light curves in 2007 were satisfactorily modeled by a cool spot on either of the eclipsing components from a magnetic dynamo. ...

QX Andromedae is a short-period eclipsing binary in the intermediate-age open cluster NGC 752. Charge-coupled device photometric observations of the close binary system obtained from 2004 November 13 to 2006 November 18 are presented. It is confirmed that the light curves show partial eclipses, and night-to-night intrinsic variations are seen. As in the case of AH Cancri in the old open cluster M67, the light curve of QX And seems to change between A and W types. Both the short- and long-term light ...
