The cardiovascular system is a complex arrangement of hydraulic, yet living, components. The complexity of this system may make it difficult for students to see the "forest" instead of the "trees." To better explain the dynamics of cardiovascular function and control, an analogy has been drawn to the operation of a city water supply. In cities that use a water tower, fresh water is pumped up into the tower from a river or other source. The tower serves as a pressure reservoir for providing water to ...

The concentration of glucose is tightly regulated in the blood by a complicated set of physiological variables. To provide students with a means to more readily understand these complex mechanisms, the control of the water level in a beaver pond is presented as an analogy. A beaver must maintain a constant water level in the pond for the proper functioning of the lodge, just as blood glucose is maintained for, among other reasons, brain function. The beaver controls the water level by changing outflow ...

An outbreak of Neisseria meningitidis serotype B infection occurred at a small residential university; public health announced an organizational vaccination program with the 4-component Meningococcal B (4CMenB) vaccine (Bexsero(TM), Novartis/GlaxoSmithKline Inc.) several days later. Since there were limited published data on reactogenicity of 4CMenB in persons over 17years of age, this study sought to conduct rapid surveillance of health events in vaccinees and controls using an online survey. Vaccine ...

Measurements of the muon charge asymmetry in inclusive pp to WX production at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV are presented. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.7 inverse femtobarns recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC. With a sample of more than twenty million W to mu nu events, the statistical precision is greatly improved in comparison to previous measurements. These new results provide additional constraints on the parton distribution functions of the proton in the range of the Bjorken ...

Background Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program-Education (SNAP-Ed) has demonstrated improvement in nutrition behavior among participants. Food insecurity affects many SNAP-Ed participants, and questions remain about solutions. Further, disparities in food security are known to exist among racial groups. Objective To determine the effect of Cooking Matters (CM) curriculum on food security among SNAP-Ed participants in Florida stratified by race. Study Design, Settings, Participants CM is a six- ...
