Global access to advanced vaccine technologies is challenged by the interrelated components of intellectual property (IP) management strategies, technology transfer (legal and technical) capabilities and the capacity necessary for accelerating R&D, commercialization and delivery of vaccines. Due to a negative association with the management of IP, patents are often overlooked as a vast resource of freely available, information akin to scientific journals as well as business and technological information ...

The duration of meiosis and its constituent stages are given for diploid and autotetraploid Ymer barley grown at 20 °C in continuous light. In the diploid, the total meiotic time was about 39 ± 1 hr in both cultured anthers and on whole plants. In the tetraploid, the total meiotic time was about 31 ± 1 hr in cultured anthers. In both genotypes, each meiotic stage occupied about the same proportion of the total meiotic time as in other species. In unsampled anthers the tapetal nuclei divided synchronously ...

The relationships between telomeric heterochromatin on rye (Secale cereale L.) chromosomes, the occurrence of aberrant endosperm nuclei early during endosperm development, and kernel characteristics as seen at maturity were investigated in hexaploid spring triticale (× Triticosecale Wittmack). A positive relationship was established between the presence of telomeric heterochromatin on the short arms of rye chromosomes 4R/7R and 6R, and the production of aberrant endosperm nuclei. The removal of telomeric ...

In eight winter triticales (× Triticosecale Wittmack) chosen from the Cambridge crossing program all seven rye (Secale cereale L.) chromosomes were present. However, a number of rye chromosomes showed an obvious reduction in the size of C-bands at one or more telomeres, compared with normal rye. In two lines the C-band at the short arm telomere of 2R was obviously larger than normal in rye. Comparison of these results with those published for spring triticales suggests that divergent selection pressures ...

Cytogenetic evidence is presented that the cross between hexaploid bread wheat (Triticum aestivum, 2n = 42) and maize (Zea mays, 2n = 20) results in a hybrid zygote with one complete haploid chromosome set from each parent. Maize chromosomes are subsequently eliminated. This sytem has potential for wheat haploid production and may also allow segments of maize DNA, including transposable elements, to be transferred to wheat.Key words: wide crosses, wheat, maize, chromosome elimination, haploids.

The 4C nuclear DNA content was estimated for 17 wild Hordeum species and five cultivated Hordeum vulgare varieties which were chosen to include examples varying greatly in geographical origin and in morphological and physiological characters. Nuclear DNA was measured on an integrating microdensitometer using prophase nuclei in Feulgen stained root-tip squashes. There were no significant differences in DNA content between any or the 15 diploid genotypes measured, and the seven polyploid genotypes ...

In this paper, we report experiments examining the effect of cyclosporine A on "run-off" translation in microsomes isolated from tissues of Sprague-Dawley rats. In microsomes isolated from rat brain, kidney and thymus, cyclosporine A added in vitro in concentrations of up to 100 micrograms/ml did not reduce [3H]L-leucine incorporation relative to controls. A small dose-dependent reduction in [3H]leucine incorporation was observed in microsomes isolated from rat liver when cyclosporine A was added in ...

Chromosome 1R is readily distinguished from all other rye chromosomes and from all the chromosomes of hexaploid wheat in both Giemsa stained root-tip metaphase cells and in Feulgen stained antipodal cells with highly endopolyploid nuclei. Studies of these cells, stained using the appropriate methods, show that the two varieties 'Weique' and 'Neuzucht' both contain a single pair of alien substituted chromosomes and confirm their identity as chromosome 1R. It is also shown that the two varieties 'Aurora' ...

Significant interspecific variation in DNA amount was observed among nine species of Piper. The durations of meiosis and pollen development were estimated in Petkus Spring rye and Chinese Spring wheat grown at 15, 20 and 25 °C. Over the range 15-25 °C, meiotic duration and pollen maturation time decreased with increasing temperature and the ratio between the durations of these stages at 25 °C and at 15 °C (Q 10 ) indicated that the temperature responses of meiotic and pollen development were similar in both species. This paper addresses the question of how just‐in‐time can be implemented within high variety manufacture. To illustrate some of the principles in relation to the high variety‐low volume situation the case of a computer manufacturer is considered in detail. For contrast the paper also considers the case of the manufacture of highly‐configured four wheel drive vehicles where both variety and volumes are high. The most important issue in high variety/low volume production is that JIT operation should ...

Paspalum conspersum Schrad. ex Schult. is a leafy, robust, warm season perennial bunchgrass native to South America. A cytogenetic investigation was conducted to determine the feasibility of using the grass in an interspecific hybridization program. Four introductions were studied and each had a chromosome number of 2n = 4x = 40. During meiosis, the chromosomes paired primarily as bivalents with an occasional quadrivalent and a limited number of univalents. A study of megasporogenesis and embryo sac ...
