Interference alignment (IA) has been shown to achieve the maximum achievable degrees of freedom in the interference channel. This results in sum rate scaling linearly with the number of users in the high signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) regime. Linear scaling is achieved by precoding the transmitted signals to align interference subspaces at the receivers given channel knowledge of all transmit-receive pairs, effectively reducing the number of discernible interferers. The theory of IA was derived under ...

The visionary concept of zero waste advocates a systematic process of designing out waste and recovering resources from waste. A strategic zero waste framework (ZWF) is essential for developing and executing systematic waste management activities to achieve the overarching goals. This study identifies the key principles for the development of a strategic ZWF based on a waste experts’ survey analysis. Around 68 experts from different regions responded and provided their views on the key elements of ...

The tannery industry is characterized by the consumption of a large quantity of water, around 30–40 m3 for processing 1000 kg of hide or skin. This amount becomes wastewater, containing about 300 kg of different chemicals, mainly refractory organic compounds, with high chemical oxygen demand (COD), total dissolved salts (TDS), chromium, and evolution of toxic gases, such as ammonia and sulfides, etc. The remaining tanning chemicals are released as effluent having high resistance against biological ...

This paper will explore the university campus community’s perspective towards the realization of a zero-waste campus. A qualitative approach is employed to identify the factors influencing the campus community’s awareness and participation in solid waste management (SWM). Perceptions, attitudes, beliefs, opinions, and ideas of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) campus community members are explored in focus group discussions (FGD) to determine the main factors influencing their zero-waste pro-environmental ...

A major paradigm shift is examined for building new and retrofitting historic communities striving towards appropriate consumption of resources and reduced pollution: reusing and recycling water; recovering energy, nutrients, and other resources from used water and solids; attaining a sustainable use of water resources; and attaining net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions targets. The key global and regional footprints identifying the trends towards the sustainable water–energy nexus in future ecocities ...

We study dual-gated graphene bilayer/hBN moiré superlattices. Under zero magnetic field, we observe additional resistance peaks as the charge density varies. The peaks' resistivities vary approximately quadratically with an applied perpendicular displacement field D. Data fit to a continuum model yield a bilayer/hBN interaction energy scale ∼30 ± 10 meV. Under a perpendicular magnetic field, we observe Hofstadter butterfly spectra as well as symmetry-broken and fractional Chern insulator states. Their ...

AbstractTo have market relevance and gain widespread market adoption, zero energy buildings (ZEBs) will need to be designed and constructed cost-effectively, and preferably without additional costs. An approach was developed to create low-energy buildings without additional construction costs such that it yielded innovation in building technology and integration by the market. A case study of the implementation of this method is presented to provide a data point that ZEBs can be built with zero cost ...

The progression towards low- or zero-carbon buildings (as evidenced in the defined goals of the UK's Code for Sustainable Homes) introduces a paradigm shift for the energy supply infrastructure. It will no longer be sufficient to understand buildings as the demand side of an energy system – the supply side will also need consideration. Currently, electricity mainly accounts for the positive side of zero-energy building energy balances. In future, energy management strategies could also include local ...

Fuel cell driven cars belong to the ‘zero emission’ vehicles and should contribute to lower CO2 emissions. However, they contain platinum, which is known as a critical material in the European Union. This study investigated the potential contribution of recycling fuel cell vehicles (FCV) to satisfy the platinum demand arising from a widespread deployment of fuel cell vehicles in Europe. Based on a qualitative examination of the four consecutive steps in the recycling chain (collection, dismantling, ...

AbstractThe Code for Sustainable Homes will require new homes in the UK to be 'zero carbon' from 2016. Drawing upon an evolutionary innovation perspective, a gap in the literature is addressed by investigating which low and zero-carbon technologies are actually being used by house builders, rather than the prevailing emphasis on the potentiality of these technologies. Using the results from a questionnaire, three empirical contributions are made. First, house builders are selecting a narrow range ...

Numerous building projects have been presented as having 'net-zero' energy performance. Such claims use a variety of different approaches: on- and off-site renewable energy technologies, purchasing green energy credits, etc. Efforts have subsequently been directed at formulating clear definitions of 'net-zero' that provide some degree of clarity and theoretical framing. The emerging notion of 'net-positive energy' buildings raises new theoretical and practical issues and introduces several new design ...

As part of the European Green Deal, the EU aims to become climate-neutral and reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Lignite has long dominated the electricity system of Greece, providing cheap and reliable energy, given the abundant and low-cost domestic resources at the cost of increased emission. In line with its national and international commitments to climate action, Greece needs to urgently transform its energy system and overcome its technological lock-ins, paving the way for a ...

The design and assessment of net-zero buildings commonly focus exclusively on the operational phase, ignoring the embodied environmental impacts over the building life cycle. An analysis is presented on the consequences of integrating embodied impacts into the assessment of the environmental advantageousness of net-zero concepts. We study the nonequilibrium dynamics of the $q$-state Potts model following a quench from the high-temperature disordered phase to zero temperature. We calculate, within a Gaussian closure approximation, the time-dependent two-point correlation functions for general $q$. These correlation functions obey dynamic scaling with a length scale $L(t)\ensuremath{\sim}{t}^{1/2}$, while the autocorrelation function decays as $L(t{)}^{\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\lambda}(q)}$. We also establish a correspondence ...

About two decades ago, Tsfasman and Boguslavsky conjectured a formula for the maximum number of common zeros that $r$ linearly independent homogeneous polynomials of degree $d$ in $m+1$ variables with coefficients in a finite field with $q$ elements can have in the corresponding $m$-dimensional projective space. Recently, it has been shown by Datta and Ghorpade that this conjecture is valid if $r$ is at most $m+1$ and can be invalid otherwise. Moreover a new conjecture was proposed for many values of $r$ ...
