This article evaluates and develops the contribution of pragmatic sociology to the study of urban life and politics, by way of analysing recent shifts in the cultural-political forms of civic participation in formal urban planning. In doing so, it seeks to stage a critical test of the diagnosis of a 'certified', (neo-)liberal city that has recently emerged from work with Laurent Thévenot's sociology of engagements and commonalities. Drawing on extensive empirical materials on the methods and formats ...

The aim of this paper is to give a constructive proof of one of the basic theorems of tropical geometry: given a point on a tropical variety (defined using initial ideals), there exists a Puiseuxvalued "lift" of this point in the algebraic variety. This theorem is so fundamental because it justifies why a tropical variety (defined combinatorially using initial ideals) carries information about algebraic varieties: it is the image of an algebraic variety over the Puiseux series under the valuation map. ...

The ATLAS detector is used to search for excited leptons in the electromagnetic radiative decay channel ${\ensuremath{\ell}}^{*}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\ell}\ensuremath{\gamma}$. Results are presented based on the analysis of $pp$ collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $2.05\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{f}{\mathrm{b}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$. No evidence for excited leptons is found, and limits are set on the compositeness scale $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ as ...

ABSTRACT The concept of localized learning outlines how local conditions and spatial proximity between actors enable the formation of distinctive cognitive repertoires and influence the generation and selection of skills, processes, and products within a field of knowledge or activity. The localized learning argument consists of two distinct yet related elements. One has to do with localized capabilities that enhance learning, while the other concerns the possible benefits that firms with similar ...

Spike-in of standards of known concentrations used in proteomics-based workflows is an attractive approach for both accurate and precise multiplexed protein quantification. Here, a quantitative method based on targeted proteomics analysis of plasma proteins using isotope-labeled recombinant standards originating from the Human Protein Atlas project has been established. The standards were individually quantified prior to being employed in the final multiplex assay. The assays are mainly directed ...

We propose a quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) algorithm for nonequilibrium dynamics in a system with a parameter varying as a function of imaginary time. The method is based on successive applications of an evolving Hamiltonian to an initial state and delivers results for a whole range of the tuning parameter in a single run, allowing for access to both static and dynamic properties of the system. This approach reduces to the standard Schr\"odinger dynamics in imaginary time for quasi-adiabatic evolutions, ...

We obtain upper and lower bounds for the nonlinear variational capacity of thin annuli in weighted $$\mathbf {R}^n$$ and in metric spaces, primarily under the assumptions of an annular decay property and a Poincaré inequality. In particular, if the measure has the 1-annular decay property at $$x_0$$ and the metric space supports a pointwise 1-Poincaré inequality at $$x_0$$ , then the upper and lower bounds are comparable and we get a two-sided estimate for thin annuli centred at $$x_0$$ . This generalizes the ...

This article builds on ethnographic work concerning on-going collective efforts in the Japanese city of Kyoto aiming to reposition a vernacular style of wooden housing, known as kyō-machiya, into a hybrid eco-design widely considered an appropriate local response to the global challenges of climate change. To understand the dynamic interplay of architecture and community-building in this case, the article stages a theoretical debate on the politics of shared attachments between three proponents ...

This article discusses the fruitfulness of Laurent Thévenot's pragmatic sociology of engagements to the study of change in professional authority, a central yet unresolved theoretical issue in the sociology of professions. Invoking Andrew Abbott's seminal notion of professional jurisdiction as starting point, the article uncovers how pragmatic sociology's landmark model of dynamics of justification contains the seeds of an original reworking, build on plural grammars of legitimacy for shoring up ...

Clinical metabolic research needs tools to get a footprint of human physiology and pathophysiology in vivo. The novel idea of monitoring interstitial fluid by microdialysis in the brain of laboratory animals was a complement to ordinary blood sampling. Semipermeable hollow fibers were implemented in the brain-tissue mimicking characteristics of artificial blood vessels communicating with freely diffusing molecules in situ. Subcutaneous microdialysis for measurements of interstitial concentrations ...

Abstract We consider a continuous, infinitely divisible random field in R d given as an integral of a kernel function with respect to a Lévy basis with convolution equivalent Lévy measure. For a large class of such random fields we compute the asymptotic probability that the supremum of the field exceeds the level x as x → ∞. Our main result is that the asymptotic probability is equivalent to the right tail of the underlying Lévy measure.

Policy makers and scholars often regard the life science industry in general, and bio-technology in particular, as an engine of future economic growth. The expectation is that growth in the industry will ultimately provide a major boost to national employment numbers. However, in this paper, I find that the Swedish life science industry (encompassing pharmaceutical, bio-technology, and medical technology firms) accounts for only a small proportion of total employment in Sweden. Given the recent discussion ...

The vertex-edge domination number of a graph, γ ve (G), is defined to be the cardinality of a smallest set D such that there exists a vertex cover C of G such that each vertex in C is dominated by a vertex in D. This is motivated by the problem of determining how many guards are needed in a graph so that a searchlight can be shone down each edge by a guard either incident to that edge or at most distance one from a vertex incident to the edge. Our main result is that for any cubic graph G with n vertices, ...

The trichotomy between regular, semiregular, and strongly irregular boundary points for $p$-harmonic functions is obtained for unbounded open sets in complete metric spaces with a doubling measure supporting a $p$-Poincar\'e inequality, $1<p<\infty$. We show that these are local properties. We also deduce several characterizations of semiregular points and strongly irregular points. In particular, semiregular points are characterized by means of capacity, $p$-harmonic measures, removability, and semibarriers.

We present a data-driven proof of concept method for image-based semantic segmentation of objects based on their materials. We target materials with complex radiometric appearances, such as reflective and refractive materials, as their detection is particularly challenging in many modern vision systems. Specifically, we select glass, chrome, plastic, and ceramics as these often appear in real-world settings. A large dataset of synthetic images is generated with the Blender 3D creation suite and ...
