The pinacol coupling is one of the most significant methods to synthesize vic-diols. The combination of samarium diiodide (SmI2) and samarium metal successfully induces the selective pinacol couplings of not only aromatic aldehydes and ketones but also aliphatic ones in the presence of trimethylchlorosilane (Me3SiCl) in 1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME). A catalytic asymmetric O ‐nitroso aldol reaction of alkenyl trifluoroacetates with nitrosoarenes was achieved by using QuinoxP* · AgOAc [( R , R )‐QuinoxP* = (–)‐( R , R )‐2,3‐bis( tert ‐butylmethylphosphino)quinoxaline] as the chiral precatalyst and N , N ‐diisopropylethylamine as the base precatalyst in the presence of methanol. Optically active α‐aminooxy ketones with up to 99 % ee were regioselectively obtained in moderate to high yields by the in situ generated chiral silver enolates.

Preferential c -axis orientation of LiTaO 3 was observed in surface crystallized 35Li 2 O·30Ta 2 O 5 ·35SiO 2 glass. Second harmonic generation (SHG) was observed in surface crystallized glass poled at room temperature for 24 h under a 0.7 kV dc voltage, whereas it was not observed in an unpoled sample. The SHG observed in this study was attributed to residual polarization in LiTaO 3 . The d 33 value of the poled sample was estimated as 0.13 pm/V which was 0.5% of the d 33 value for LiTaO 3 single crystal.
