We fabricated two new types of multi-stage micromixers, YM-1 and YM-2. In these devices, mixing is achieved through the repeated splitting and recombination of the fluid flow. It was shown that the two types of micromixers presented here were capable to produce soap free emulsions at short contact times. From the investigation of the effects of the device wall material, the number of stages, etc. on the size of the droplets in the resulting emulsion, it was clarified that the emulsion was formed ...

Waste foundry sand (WFS), which is a hazardous byproduct from the foundry industry, is often contaminated with potentially toxic elements (PTEs), such as Cu, Pb and Zn, and widely re-utilized as a construction material. Therefore, the depollution of WFS has been suggested due to its environment friendly reprocessing to avoid potential long-term hazardous impacts. In the current study, a unique chemically induced technique has been proposed for the removal of PTEs from WFS. EDTA, NaOH and NH3 were ...

Non-ferrous smelting dust, especially lead-smelting dust (LSD), contains percent levels of indium and thus constitutes a novel indium resource. The main difficulty in recovering indium from LSD is the coexisting presence of lead and zinc. In this study, a unique indium separation process was designed, combining techniques that involve washing with a chelant, leaching with acid and precipitation as hydroxide. The majority of the Pb in the LSD was selectively separated during chelant-assisted washing ...

Dense granular flows are encountered in various engineering fields. The discrete element method (DEM) is used extensively for the numerical simulation of these flow types. Improvements in computer specifications have made it possible to apply the DEM in various systems. Although the DEM is well-established, it has a fatal problem. The problem is that the number of calculated particles is substantially restricted when the simulation needs to be finished within practical time using a single personal ...
