Stopped-flow fluorescence kinetic measurements, circular dichroism (CD), and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy at 360 MHz have been used to study the interaction of the calcium-channel blocker and calmodulin antagonist bepridil with cardiac troponin C (cTnC) in the presence of calcium. The kinetic data show that bepridil reduces the rate of calcium release only from the low affinity, calcium-specific site and not from the two high affinity calcium/magnesium sites. CD measurements indicate ...

We show that the degree-degree correlations have a major impact on global synchronizability (GS) of multiplex networks, enabling the specification of synchronizability by only changing the degree-degree correlations of the mirror nodes while maintaining the connection architecture of the individual layer unaltered. If individual layers have nodes that are mildly correlated, the multiplex network is best synchronizable when the mirror degrees are strongly negatively correlated. If individual layers ...

Façades cover a significant amount of surfaces in cities and are in constant interaction with the acoustic environment. Noise pollution is one of the most concerning burdens for public health and wellbeing; however, façade acoustic performance is generally not considered in outdoor spaces, in contrast to indoor spaces. This study presents a systematic literature review examining 40 peer-reviewed papers regarding the effects of façades on the urban acoustic environment and the soundscape. Façades ...

Although hundreds of genetic association studies of ischaemic stroke have been published, the failure to replicate associations has led to scepticism about their findings. Possible explanations for this failure are: (1) a false-positive association in the initial study; (2) a false-negative association in a replication study; (3) methodological differences (e.g. study populations or study designs). We review underlying causes for replication failure, such as small sample size, multiple testing and publication ...

Novel approaches toward understanding the evolution of disease can lead to the discovery of biomarkers that will enable better management of disease progression and improve prognostic evaluation. Raman spectroscopy is a promising investigative and diagnostic tool that can assist in uncovering the molecular basis of disease and provide objective, quantifiable molecular information for diagnosis and treatment evaluation. This technique probes molecular vibrations/rotations associated with chemical ...

Understanding the mechanism of ligands binding to their protein targets and the influence of various factors governing the binding thermodynamics is essential for rational drug design. The solution pH is one of the critical factors that can influence ligand binding to a protein cavity, especially in enzymes whose function is sensitive to the pH. Using computer simulations, we studied the pH effect on the binding of a guanidinium ion (Gdm+) to the active site of hen egg-white lysozyme (HEWL). HEWL ...

In this paper, we present a topology discovery protocol for a stateful path computation element (PCE), in which the PCE has an out-of-band control channel to every switch in a unified control. The proposed protocol is an extended version of the PCE communication protocol (PCEP) called the Generalized TOPology (G-TOP) protocol that allows the PCE to automatically construct the network topology as a controller without using a distributed routing protocol. With the G-TOP protocol, the centralized PCE ...

A family of benzenoids, called convex benzenoids, was introduced in 2012 by Cruz, Gutman and Rada. In a later paper by the present author et al., several equivalent characterisations of convex benzenoids have been given and their equivalence was proved. Along the way an infinite benzenoid called the half-plane was used for the purpose of theoretical reasoning. In this short paper, some properties of infinite benzenoids are discussed. It is proved that their boundary consists of countably many connected ...

This work elucidates a long-standing unexplained paradox commonly observed within the polymerization of α-olefin using palladium (Pd)(II)–diimine catalysts, in which isomerization and living polymerization of α-olefins are both observed. With a classical mechanistic understanding of these complexes, this behavior is often dismissed and interpreted as experimental error. Herein, we present a comprehensive mechanistic investigation into this phenomenon that supports the existence of a novel mechanistic ...

The construction of a cycle in a graph can be realized by iteratively adding cycles of a cycle basis. The construction of each elementary cycle is only possible if this cycle basis is robust. In the last years, different classes of robust cycle bases have been established. We compare these classes and show that they are completely unrelated. More precisely, we draw a Venn diagram which displays the obvious containedness relations and show that each of its regions is not empty. In addition, we continue ...

Up until the 17th century, ideas surrounding the discovery of encephalic arteries were to remain largely influenced by the political and religious ideologies of the era. Parts of the encephalic arterial system have been called after several anatomists from this earlier period. From the 18th century onwards, scientists and doctors in particular, liberated themselves from the political and religious trends which had governed their work in previous centuries. Some progress was made by applying the ...
