Benjamin Kahan,

In the annals of the history of American sexuality, few diaries feature records of nineteenth-century sexual practice. Or if they do, such accounts are generally not extensive or elaborated, as when the diary of Mary Pierce Poor, the wife of the founder of the company that would become Standard and Poor's, denotes the beginning of her menstrual cycle with a “+” and sexual intercourse with her husband with an “x” (Janet Farrell Brodle, Contraception and Abortion in Nenteenth-Century America, 1994, p. 10). ...

The necessity of a more complete definition of the turbulent wind acting on a train is studied in this paper using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). A stochastic approach for the modeling of turbulent winds is proposed here. Synthetic winds are defined based on two different spectral models, namely the Kaimal spectrum and the Kraichnan spectrum. These are generated using Turbsim and ANSYS-FLUENT software, respectively. To complete the comparison, a third oncoming wind definition is considered, ...

In order to properly study the high-speed traffic safety on a high-pier viaduct subject to episodes of lateral turbulent winds, an efficient dynamic interaction train-bridge-wind model has been developed and experimentally validated. This model considers the full wheel and rail profiles, the friction between these two bodies in contact, and the piers P-Delta effect. The model has been used to determine the critical train and wind velocities from which the trains cannot travel safely over the O'Eixo ...

The problems on traffic safety caused by a lateral wind acting on railway vehicles are known and have been studied in the scientific literature. It is also known that the train speed increases the risk of derailment or overturning of the vehicle in a strong lateral wind event, especially with light vehicles such as the high speed trains. Some of the actions taken by public institutions of several countries to maintain the safety during the train travel with strong winds are the reduction of the ...

Abstract This contribution presents the results of numerical simulations in which a high-pier viaduct under lateral and vertical non-stationary spatially variable seismic ground motions is crossed by an articulated high-speed train at several speeds. The spectral representation method is employed to generate the required number of acceleration time-history series at each support location of the railway viaduct studied. Wave passage, local soil conditions and loss of coherency effects have been accounted ...
