A subgroup of patients with burning mouth syndrome was investigated. The clinical history of these patients differed from the norm in that symptoms were intermittent and affected unusual sites. In addition, routine investigations were supplemented with a more detailed psychological evaluation than reported previously and also a possible allergic component was studied by patch testing. The study has shown that this subgroup differs from burning mouth syndrome patients overall in that emotional instability ...

Aaron Hughes, Soha S Tawfik, K. P. Baruah, Edel A. O’Toole, Ryan F.L. O’Shaughnessy,

Tape strips have been used widely in dermatology research as a minimally invasive method to sample the epidermis, avoiding the need for skin biopsies. Most research has focused on epidermal pathology, such as atopic eczema, but there is increasing research into the use of tape strips in other dermatoses, such as skin cancer, and the microbiome. This review summarizes the technique of tape stripping, and discusses which dermatoses have been studied by tape stripping and alternative minimally invasive ...

Because cochlear implants function by stimulating the auditory nerve, it is assumed that the condition of the nerve plays an important role in the efficacy of the prosthesis. Thus, considerable research has been devoted to methods of preserving the nerve following deafness. Neurotrophins have been identified as a potential contributor to neural health, but most of the research to date has been done in young animals and for short periods (less than 3 to 6 months) after the onset of treatment. Aaron W. Hughes,

Abstract This paper examines Hermann Cohen’s idiosyncratic construction of a medieval Jewish philosophical tradition, focusing primarily, though not exclusively, on his Charakteristik der Ethik Maimunis. This construction, not unlike modern accounts, is filtered through the central place of Maimonides. For Cohen, however, Maimonides’ centrality is defined not by his systematization of Aristotelianism, but by his elevation of ethics over metaphysics. The ethical and pantheistic concerns of Maimonides’ ...

Aaron W. Hughes,

Abstract In the aftermath of September 11, the academic study of Islam has been one of the most sought-after areas of academic expertise throughout North America. The result is that many departments of Religious Studies have been eager either to develop or increase existing offerings in all things Islamic and Arabic. This strikes me as a good a time as any to reflect upon the nature of the relationship between Religious Studies and Islamic Studies. This article assumes that the integration of the ...

Bryan E. Pfingst, Aaron P. Hughes, Deborah J. Colesa, Melissa M. Watts, Stefan B. Strahl, Yehoash Raphael,

Partial loss and subsequent recovery of cochlear implant function in the first few weeks following cochlear implant surgery has been observed in previous studies using psychophysical detection thresholds. In the current study, we explored this putative manifestation of insertion trauma using objective functional measures: electrically-evoked compound action potential (ECAP) amplitude-growth functions (ECAP amplitude as a function of stimulus level). In guinea pigs implanted in a hearing ear with good ...

Donald L. Swiderski, Deborah J. Colesa, Aaron P. Hughes, Yehoash Raphael, Bryan E. Pfingst,

Fibrous tissue and/or new bone are often found surrounding a cochlear implant in the cochlear scalae. This new intrascalar tissue could potentially limit cochlear implant function by increasing impedance and altering signaling pathways between the implant and the auditory nerve. In this study, we investigated the relationship between intrascalar tissue and 5 measures of implant function in guinea pigs. Variation in both spiral ganglion neuron (SGN) survival and intrascalar tissue was produced by ...

To the Editor: We describe a case of a combined Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) associated with Bowen disease and squamous cell carcinoma that demonstrated strong and significant positivity for TTF-1 by immunohistochemistry. In addition, the tumor was CK7 and CK20 negative while demonstrating positivity for the keratin markers AE1/3, MNF116, and CK5 with areas of dot-like positivity.
