The pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA) involves an abnormal chemokine regulation. The chemokine receptor CCR4 is necessary for T cell migration to the skin. We, therefore, studied if CCR4 and its ligand macrophage-derived chemokine (MDC/CCL22) could participate in spreading the disease between skin and joints by examining RA, PsA and osteoarthritis (OA) patients. In synovial fluid from RA and PsA patients we observed a significantly higher MDC/CCL22 level compared ...

Abstract Adiabatic oscillation frequencies of stellar models, computed with the standard mixing-length formulation for convection, increasingly deviate with radial order from observations in solar-like stars. Standard solar models overestimate adiabatic frequencies by as much as ∼ 20 μHz. In this Letter, we address the physical processes of turbulent convection that are predominantly responsible for the frequency differences between standard models and observations, also called ‘surface effects’. We ...

We analyse the effect on adiabatic stellar oscillation frequencies of replacing the near-surface layers in 1D stellar structure models with averaged 3D stellar surface convection simulations. The main difference is an expansion of the atmosphere by 3D convection, expected to explain a major part of the asteroseismic surface effect; a systematic overestimation of p-mode frequencies due to inadequate surface physics. We employ pairs of 1D stellar envelope models and 3D simulations from a previous ...

Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is a chronic liver disease caused by impaired immune regulation. Programmed death-1 (PD-1) is an inhibitory receptor mainly expressed by T cells and with its ligands, PD-L1 and PD-L2 present on antigen-presenting cells. We hypothesised the PD-1 axis to be impaired in AIH and investigated systemic levels of soluble(s) PD-1 and T cells ability to up-regulate PD-1 following in vitro activation in AIH patients. We included 67 AIH patients; 9 with active disease, 31 responders ...

The lead content of 55 samples of dust collected from vacuum cleaner bags from various parts of Denmark has been determined. The concentrations found ranged from 1.5–48.9 ppm lead in the dry dust, the geometric mean being 9 ppm which is comparable to the mean concentration of lead in Danish arable soil. No correlation was found between traffic density and concentration of lead in the dusts.

The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that CAI used at low cognitive levels is as effective and motivating as conventional teaching, while requiring fewer teacher resources. Seventy-six chairside-assistant students were randomly allocated to either a CAI-group or a control group receiving conventional teaching. The subject taught was the clinical armamentarium and its use. A performance and attitude test was given to both groups. Time used for constructing the CAI program and for ...

We present a comparison between theoretical, frequency-dependent, damping rates and linewidths of radial-mode oscillations in red giant stars located in the open cluster NGC 6819. The calculations adopt a time-dependent non-local convection model, with the turbulent pressure profile being calibrated to results of 3D hydrodynamical simulations of stellar atmospheres. The linewidths are obtained from extensive peakbagging of Kepler light curves. These observational results are of unprecedented quality ...

In retail, whole, cooked Northern shrimp (Pandalus borealis) is commonly stored in illuminated display freezers for an extended time period. The aim of the present study was to understand how and when light-induced lipid oxidation occurs. Two sizes of cooked shrimp were packed in air and stored frozen with and without artificial light for 84 days. Samples were investigated for oxidative stability (peroxide value (PV), volatile compounds, and tocopherol consumption) and color changes and free astaxanthin. ...

Unemployment insurance schemes typically include eligibility conditions comprising the employment history prior to becoming unemployed, an aspect largely neglected in the literature. We develop an analytically tractable matching model including such contingencies. Unemployed determine reservation durations for jobs to be acceptable, and stronger employment histories increase reservation durations. This creates a stratification among unemployed; unemployed with short employment histories accept short- ...

Unemployment insurance schemes typically include eligibility conditions depending on the employment history of the unemployed. The literature on the design of unemployment insurance schemes has largely ignored this aspect, perhaps due to the implied history dependence and heterogeneity across otherwise identical workers. We develop an analytically tractable matching model permitting an analysis of the consequences of such history dependencies. Unemployed determine reservation durations to the jobs ...
