Recluse or violin spiders in the genus Loxosceles (Scytodoidea: Sicariidae) are a diverse group (~140 extant species) including medically important species and distributed mainly in the Americas, Africa, and the Mediterranean region. In addition, this genus includes three fossil species from Miocene Dominican amber. Here we revise the taxonomy of these fossil species by examining, imaging and re-describing their type specimens. We find that L. defecta Wunderlich, 1988 and L. deformis Wunderlich, 1988 ...

Summary This study aimed to evaluate the effect of microwave‐assisted extraction ( MAE ) parameters on the composition and bioactivity of goji ( Lycium barbarum ) extracts. Extracts were obtained under a central composite design combination of experimental conditions, and characterised through HPLC ‐ DAD ; their bioactive capacity was ascertained for antimicrobial and antioxidant capacity, the later by spectrophotometric [2,2‐azinobis (3‐ ethylbenzothiazoline‐6‐sulfonic acid) diammonium salt‐radical scavenging ...

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to determine the photochemical efficiency of ‘Gigante’ cactus pear cultivated under different spacings and bovine manure doses in the semi-arid region. The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design in a 4 x 3 x 7 factorial scheme, with three replicates. The first factor consisted of four doses of organic fertilization (0, 30, 60 and 90 Mg ha-1 year-1 of bovine manure), the second one, of three spacings (1.0 x 0.5, 2.0 x 0.25 and 3.0 x 1.0 x 0.25 ...

Passiflora morifolia, P. suberosa litoralis, and P. palmeri var. sublanceolata are three wild species with ornamental potential that occur in Brazil. These species were evaluated with the purpose of determining the effects of different shade levels on seedling emergence and initial growth. Treatment with 50% shade resulted in the highest percentage of seedling emergence and the highest emergence speed index for all three species. The 50% shade level was the best condition for growth of P. morifolia ...

Responses of leaf gas exchange, fluorescence emission, chlorophyll concentration, and morpho-anatomical features to changes in photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) were studied in three wild ornamental species of Passiflora L. to select sun and shade species for landscaping projects. Artificial shade was obtained with different shading nylon nets, under field conditions, which allowed the reduction of 25, 50, and 75% of global radiation, along with a control treatment under full sunlight. For ...

The aim of the model presented in this paper is to capture the difference in solidification behavior of long and short freezing materials. The shrinkage defects in short freezing materials tends to be internal, as porosity, while in long freezing materials these defects tend to be external in the form of surface depressions. To achieve this, a pressure drop based 3D feeding flow model has been developed to evaluate shrinkage defects for casting alloys. A continuum formulation is used to describe ...

Background: Inflammatory bowel diseases are immune-mediated disorders that include Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). UC is a progressive disease that affects the colorectal mucosa causing debilitating symptoms leading to high morbidity and work disability. As a consequence of chronic colonic inflammation, UC is also associated with an increased risk of colorectal cancer. Objective: This consensus aims to provide guidance on the most effective medical management of adult patients with ...

We evaluated the prevalence of anti-Toxoplasma gondii antibodies in the serum samples collected from domestic cats in Belém, Pará, Brazil. We also correlated the presence of T. gondii antibodies with environmental variables and cat-owner habits. Four-hundred and forty-seven serum samples from domestic cats were analyzed. The sera were tested using an indirect immunofluorescence assay. Among the animals analyzed, 21.92% (98/447) were seropositive. A statistically significant association was found ...

The diagnosis of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) presents problems due to the toxicity and/or high cost of drugs. In addition, no vaccine exists to protect against human disease. In this study, the antigenicity and immunogenicity of amastin protein were evaluated in L. infantum–infected dogs and humans. For the diagnosis, besides the recombinant protein, 1 linear B-cell epitope was synthetized and evaluated in serological assays. Results showed high sensitivity and specificity values to detect the disease ...

Abstract Geometric regularity of spider webs has been intensively studied in orb‐weaving spiders, although it is not exclusive of orb weavers. Here, we document the geometrically regular, repetitive elements in the webs of the non‐orb‐weaving groups Leptonetidae and Telemidae for the first time. Similar to orb weavers, we found areas with regularly spaced parallel lines in the webs of Calileptoneta helferi , Sulcia sp., and cf. Pinelema sp. Furthermore, we provide a detailed account of the regular ...

Psilodercidae contains some 200 known extant species of small spiders that live in tropical rainforests and caves and is mainly restricted to the Oriental biogeographic realm. Interestingly, at least ten different fossil species have been described from inclusions in Upper Cretaceous Burmese amber. This suggests the family has been diversifying in the region for at least ~100 million years. In this paper, we revise the taxonomy of fossil species of this family and the closely related Ochyroceratidae, ...

The present paper presents a three-dimensional model that is capable of predicting the pressure drop due to shrinkage. The model is based on fluid flow calculation considering a drag force (Darcy term) that is function of fraction solid and on the external surface resistance to move. It considers external defects, in the form of surface depressions, and internal shrinkage defects. By coupling the feed flow, pressure and solidification calculation for predicting shrinkage defects, a complete methodology ...
