The pathologic features of ulcerative colitis (UC) in patients with primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) are, essentially, unknown. One previous clinical study suggested that UC-PSC patients reveal a high rate of rectal sparing and backwash ileitis. The purpose of this study was to systematically evaluate the pathologic characteristics and distribution of colonic disease in UC-PSC patients and to compare the results with a matched control group of UC patients without PSC.Forty UC-PSC patients and ...

Abstract Background and Objective Mucositis is the most common oral complication of cancer chemotherapy, which causes pain on mastication and swallowing, impairs patients' ability to eat and take oral drugs and may determine interruption of the treatment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of light‐emitting diode (LED) therapy on chemotherapy‐induced mucositis in hamsters. Study Design/Materials and Methods Animals of both experimental (Group I; n = 32) and positive control (Group II; n = ...

Abstract A total of 162 rotavirus strains detected between 1996 and 2006 among individuals with diarrhea in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, were analyzed by multiple‐gene genotyping. Characterization of strains was done by RT‐PCR assay for amplification and typing of the VP7‐, VP4‐, VP6‐, and NSP4‐encoding genes. Overall, 139 (85.8%) strains belonged to the common group A rotavirus combinations: 67 (41.4%) belonged to genotype G1‐P[8]‐I1‐E1; 18 (11.1%) were G2‐P[4]‐I2‐E2; 11 (6.8%) were G3‐P[8]‐I1‐E1; 12 (7. ...

Germline mutations in the von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) tumor suppressor gene predispose people to renal cancer, hemangioblastomas, and pheochromocytomas in an allele-specific manner. The best documented function of the VHL gene product (pVHL) relates to its ability to polyubiquitinate, and hence target for destruction, the alpha subunits of the heterodimeric transcription factor hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF). pVHL mutants linked to familial pheochromocyctoma (type 2C VHL disease), in contrast to classical ...

The aims of this study were to compare the detection of human herpesviruses (HHVs) in the saliva of HIV-infected and healthy control children, and to evaluate associations between viral infection and gingivitis and immunodeficiency. Saliva samples were collected from 48 HIV-infected and 48 healthy control children. Clinical and laboratory data were collected during dental visits and from medical records. A trained dentist determined gingival indices and extension of gingivitis. Saliva samples were ...

Next-generation genomics holds great potential in the study of plant phenotypic variation. With several crop reference genomes now available, the affordable costs of de novo genome assembly or target resequencing offer the opportunity to mine the enormous amount of genetic diversity hidden in crop wild relatives. Wide introgressions from these wild ancestors species or land races represent a possible strategy to improve cultivated varieties. In this review, we discuss the mechanisms underlying metabolic ...

Heterosis has been extensively exploited for yield gain in maize (Zea mays L.). Here we conducted a comparative metabolomics-based analysis of young roots from in vitro germinating seedlings and from leaves of field-grown plants in a panel of inbred lines from the Dent and Flint heterotic patterns as well as selected F1 hybrids. We found that metabolite levels in hybrids were more robust than in inbred lines. Using state-of-the-art modeling techniques, the most robust metabolites from roots and leaves ...

SUMMARY Primary metabolism plays a pivotal role in normal plant growth, development and reproduction. As maize is a major crop worldwide, the primary metabolites produced by maize plants are of immense importance from both calorific and nutritional perspectives. Here a genome‐wide association study ( GWAS ) of 61 primary metabolites using a maize association panel containing 513 inbred lines identified 153 significant loci associated with the level of these metabolites in four independent tissues. The ...

Summary Maize is the cereal crop with the highest production worldwide, and its oil is a key energy resource. Improving the quantity and quality of maize oil requires a better understanding of lipid metabolism. To predict the function of maize genes involved in lipid biosynthesis, we assembled transcriptomic and lipidomic data sets from leaves of B73 and the high‐oil line By804 in two distinct time‐series experiments. The integrative analysis based on high‐dimensional regularized regression yielded ...
