Baryon acoustic oscillation data from the first year of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) provide near percent-level precision of cosmic distances in seven bins over the redshift range $z=0.1$-$4.2$. We use this data, together with other distance probes, to constrain the cosmic expansion history using some well-motivated physical classes of dark energy. In particular, we explore three physics-focused behaviors of dark energy from the equation of state and energy density perspectives: ...

A cationic steroid with a hydrogen-bonding pocket that has an affinity for anionic phospholipid headgroups was synthesized and shown to strongly promote the translocation or flip-flop of a fluorescent, C6NBD-labeled phosphatidylserine probe (C6NBD-PS) across vesicle membranes. In addition, the synthetic PS scramblase increases the levels of endogenous PS on the surface of erythrocytes as monitored by flow cytometry analysis of annexin V−FITC binding. The PS scrambling effect is enhanced when the ...

Nathalie Leresche, Régis C. Lambert, Adam C. Errington, Vincenzo Crunelli,

The temporal coincidence of sleep spindles and spike-and-wave discharges (SWDs) in patients with idiopathic generalized epilepsies, together with the transformation of spindles into SWDs following intramuscular injection of the weak GABAA receptor (GABAAR) antagonist, penicillin, in an experimental model, brought about the view that SWDs may represent 'perverted' sleep spindles. Over the last 20 years, this hypothesis has received considerable support, in particular by in vitro studies of thalamic ...

Sarah Lambert, Adam T. Watson, Daniel M. Sheedy, B.R. Martin, Antony M. Carr,

Genomic rearrangements linked to aberrant recombination are associated with cancer and human genetic diseases. Such recombination has indirectly been linked to replication fork stalling. Using fission yeast, we have developed a genetic system to block replication forks at nonhistone/DNA complexes located at a specific euchromatic site. We demonstrate that stalled replication forks lead to elevated intrachromosomal and ectopic recombination promoting site-specific gross chromosomal rearrangements. ...

Benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) is an archetypal member of the family of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and is a widely distributed environmental pollutant. B[a]P is known to induce cancer in animals, and B[a]P-containing complex mixtures are human carcinogens. B[a]P exerts its genotoxic and carcinogenic effects through metabolic activation forming reactive intermediates that damage DNA. DNA adduction by B[a]P is a complex phenomenon that involves the formation of both stable and unstable (depurinating) ...

Summary In some animal groups, the secondary embryonic axis is patterned by a small group of cells, often called an organizer, that signals to other cells to establish the correct pattern of cell fates. The Dpp/BMP2-4 pathway plays a central role in secondary axis patterning in many animals [1–11], but it has not been examined during early axial patterning in spiralian embryogenesis. This is a deeply conserved mode of development found in mollusks, annelids, nemerteans, entoprocts, and some marine platyhelminth ...

Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) is an immune-mediated thrombocytopenic disorder associated with a severe prothrombotic state. We investigated whether neutrophils and neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) contribute to the development of thrombosis in HIT. Using an endothelialized microfluidic system and a murine passive immunization model, we show that HIT induction leads to increased neutrophil adherence to venous endothelium. In HIT mice, endothelial adherence is enhanced immediately downstream ...

Ben Lambert, Adam L. MacLean, Alexander G. Fletcher, Alexander N. Combes, Melissa H. Little, Helen M. Byrne,

The adult mammalian kidney has a complex, highly-branched collecting duct epithelium that arises as a ureteric bud sidebranch from an epithelial tube known as the nephric duct. Subsequent branching of the ureteric bud to form the collecting duct tree is regulated by subcellular interactions between the epithelium and a population of mesenchymal cells that surround the tips of outgrowing branches. The mesenchymal cells produce glial cell-line derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF), that binds with RET ...

While electronic prescribing has been shown to reduce medication errors and improve prescribing safety, it is vulnerable to error-prone processes. We review six intersecting areas in which changes to electronic prescribing systems, particularly in the outpatient setting, could transform medication ordering quality and safety. With UK housing contributing almost one-third of national final energy consumption, energy research and policy are striving to understand how residents perceive and use domestic energy-saving technologies, including smart heating controls. Smart heating controls have been projected to generate significant energy savings, but there is little evidence to suggest that they are more usable than traditional thermostats, and that they cause residents to use their heating more efficiently. Exceptional points, resulting from non-Hermitian degeneracies, have the potential to enhance the capabilities of quantum sensing. Thus, finding exceptional points in different quantum systems is vital for developing such future sensing devices. Taking advantage of the enhanced light-matter interactions in a confined volume on a metal nanoparticle surface, here we theoretically demonstrate the existence of exceptional points in a system consisting of quantum emitters coupled to a metal nanoparticle ...

Beta-adrenergic blockade has been associated with improved cancer survival in patients with triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), but the mechanisms of these effects remain unclear. In clinical epidemiological analyses, we identified a relationship between beta-blocker use and anthracycline chemotherapy in protecting against TNBC progression, disease recurrence, and mortality. We recapitulated the effect of beta-blockade on anthracycline efficacy in xenograft mouse models of TNBC. In metastatic 4T1. ...

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is an emergent coronavirus that has caused a worldwide pandemic. Although human disease is often asymptomatic, some develop severe illnesses such as pneumonia, respiratory failure, and death. There is an urgent need for a vaccine to prevent its rapid spread as asymptomatic infections accounting for up to 40% of transmission events. Here we further evaluated an inactivated rabies vectored SARS-CoV-2 S1 vaccine CORAVAX in a Syrian hamster ...

Arginase deficiency is associated with prominent neuromotor features, including spastic diplegia, clonus, and hyperreflexia; intellectual disability and progressive neurological decline are other signs. In a constitutive murine model, we recently described leukodystrophy as a significant component of the central nervous system features of arginase deficiency. In the present studies, we sought to examine if the administration of a lipid nanoparticle carrying human ARG1 mRNA to constitutive knockout ...
