MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of approximately 22 nucleotides single-stranded non-coding RNA molecules that play crucial roles in gene expression. It has been reported that the plant miRNAs might enter mammalian bloodstream and have a functional role in human metabolism, indicating that miRNAs might be one of the hidden bioactive ingredients in medicinal plants. Viscum album L. (Loranthaceae, European mistletoe) has been widely used for the treatment of cancer and cardiovascular diseases, but its ...

The study aim was to evaluate the utility of 2-fraction, dose-staged Gamma Knife radiosurgery (GKRS) in patients with large, high-risk brain metastases (BMs). A total of 63 large BMs in eloquent areas in 61 patients were treated with GKRS in 2 reduced doses. Treatment planning was conducted on the 50% isodose line and included the whole tumor volume as seen on T1 contrast-enhanced and T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging sections. The median margin and central dose were 12 Gy and 24 Gy, respectively, ...

The cyanogenic glucosides dhurrin [2S-β-d-glucopyranosyloxy-2-(4-hydroxy)-phenylacetonitrile] and taxiphyllin [2R-β-d-glucopyranosyloxy-2-(4-hydroxy) -phenylacetonitrile] have been isolated as the only cyanogenic glycosides from all parts of Suckleya suckleyana (dhurrin) and a herbarium specimen of Girgensohnia oppositiflora (taxiphyllin) of the Chenopodiaceae. The leaves of S. suckleyana contain the highest concentration of dhurrin followed by fruits, stems and roots.

There is only limited information on patient satisfaction with emergency medical services (EMS). The aim of this multicentre survey was to evaluate patient satisfaction in five out-of-hospital physician-based EMS in Austria and Switzerland. The psychometrically tested and standardized questionnaire 'patient satisfaction in out-of-hospital emergency care' was used for this survey. The recruitment of the patients was carried out on the basis of inclusion and exclusion criteria. All questionnaires were ...

Pharmacokinetic interactions often occur as a result of activity changes of drug-metabolizing and transporting proteins, especially cytochrome P450 (CYP) isoenzymes and P-glycoprotein (P-gp). The activity of these enzymes and drug transporters can be enhanced or inhibited by synthetic drugs as well as by natural products. Since the number of herb-drug interactions has increased in recent years, systematic in vitro screenings and more clinical studies to identify such interactions were proposed for ...

The ability of ultra-high-resolution optical coherence tomography (UHR OCT) to discriminate between healthy and pathological human brain tissue is examined by imaging ex vivo tissue morphology of various brain biopsies. Micrometer-scale OCT resolution (0.9×2 µm, axial×lateral) is achieved in biological tissue by interfacing a state-of-the-art Ti:Al2O3 laser (c=800 nm, =260 nm, and Pout=120 mW exfiber) to a free-space OCT system utilizing dynamic focusing. UHR OCT images are acquired from both healthy ...

One is the known sutherlandin (Z-4-beta-D-glucopyranosyloxy-3-hydroxymethylbut-2-ene nitrile); the second is Z-4-beta-glucopyranosyloxy-3-methylbut-2-ene nitrile, which has recently been characterized but whose stereochemistry was not previously determined; the Z-isomer identified here was named osmaronin. The third is the new 4-beta-D-glucopyranosyloxy- ...

Caffeic acid, fukinolic acid as well as cimicifugic acids A, B, E and F isolated from the rhizomes of Cimicifuga racemosa (Ranunculaceae) inhibited the activity of neutrophil elastase (EC 3.4.21.37) in a dose-dependent manner. An IC50 of 93 μmol/L was determined for caffeic acid and 0.23 μmol/L for fukinolic acid. Cimicifugic acid A inhibited the enzyme with an IC50 of 2.2 μmol/L, cimicifugic acid B with 11.4 μmol/L, and cimicifugic acid F with 18 μmol/L. Cimicifugic acid E was only a very weak inhibitor.

High dose ionizing radiation (IR) induces potent toxic cell effects mediated by either direct DNA damage or the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). IR-induced modulations in multiple biological processes have been proposed to be partly regulated by radiosensitive microRNA (miRNA). In order to gain new insights into the role of miRNAs in the regulation of biological processes after IR, we have investigated changes in mRNA and miRNA expression after high dose IR. IR induced changes in the mRNA ...

Abstract We previously showed that, when peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were stressed with ionizing radiation, they released paracrine factors that showed regenerative capacity in vitro and in vivo . This study aimed to characterize the secretome of PBMCs and to investigate its biologically active components in vitro and vivo . Bioinformatics analysis revealed that irradiated PBMCs differentially expressed genes that encoded secreted proteins. These genes were primarily involved in (a) pro- ...

Abstract In recent years, superluminescent diodes (SLDs) have gained increasing importance as light sources for partial coherence interferometry and optical coherence tomography. The requirements of SLDs are high spatial coherence, low temporal coherence, and, for some applications, high power. Since there might be a trade-off between these properties we built an instrument for measuring the spatial coherence of SLDs. This instrument consists of a hybrid bulk optic-fibre optic Mach-Zehnder interferometer. ...

Corticosteroids regulate vital processes, including stress responses, systemic metabolism, and blood pressure. Here, we show that corticosteroid synthesis is related to the polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) content of mitochondrial phospholipids in adrenocortical cells. Inhibition of the rate-limiting enzyme of PUFA synthesis, fatty acid desaturase 2 (FADS2), leads to perturbations in the mitochondrial lipidome and diminishes steroidogenesis. Consistently, the adrenocortical mitochondria of Fads2 −/− ...

Abstract Agrostemma githago L. (corn cockle) is an herbaceous plant mainly growing in Europe. The seeds of the corn cockle are toxic and poisonings were widespread in the past by consuming contaminated flour. The toxic principle of Agrostemma seeds was attributed to triterpenoid secondary metabolites. Indeed, this is in part true. However Agrostemma githago L. is also a producer of ribosome-inactivating proteins (RIPs). RIPs are N -glycosylases that inactivate the ribosomal RNA, a process leading to ...

In smart factories, maintenance is still an important aspect to safeguard the performance of their production. Especially in case of failures of machine components diagnosis is a time-consuming task. This paper presents an approach for a cyber-physical failure management system, which uses information from machines such as programmable logic controller or sensor data and IT systems to support the diagnosis and repairing process. Key element is a model combining the different information sources ...

Aldosterone and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) are involved in many pathophysiological processes that contribute to the development of cardiovascular diseases. Previously, associations between the concentrations of aldosterone and certain components of the lipid metabolism in the peripheral circulation were suggested, but data from the general population is sparse. We therefore aimed to assess the associations between aldosterone and HDL-C, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), ...
