The Author Profiling (AP) task aims to determine specific demographic characteristics such as gender and age, by analyzing the language usage in groups of authors. Notwithstanding the recent advances in AP, this is still an unsolved problem, especially in the case of social media domains. According to the literature most of the work has been devoted to the analysis of useful textual features. The most prominent ones are those related with content and style. In spite of the success of using jointly ...

Abstract Low-level states of consciousness are characterized by disruptions of brain activity that sustain arousal and awareness. Yet, how structural, dynamical, local and network brain properties interplay in the different levels of consciousness is unknown. Here, we study fMRI brain dynamics from patients that suffered brain injuries leading to a disorder of consciousness and from healthy subjects undergoing propofol-induced sedation. We show that pathological and pharmacological low-level states ...

MicroRNAs (miRNA) regulate expression of several genes associated with human cancer. Here, we analyzed the function of miR-34c, an effector of p53, in cervical carcinoma cells. Expression of either miR-34c-3p or miR-34c-5p mimics caused inhibition of cell proliferation in the HPV-containing SiHa cells but not in other cervical cells irrespective of tumorigenicity and HPV content. These results suggest that SiHa cells may lack of regulatory mechanisms for miR-34c. Monolayer proliferation results showed ...

The mechanical behaviour of laminated glass elements is governed by material properties of the interlayer, the Polyvinyl Butiral (PVB) being the most used interlayer material in these elements. PVB is a viscoelastic material whose mechanical properties (Young’s modulus, shear modulus, etc.) depend mainly on the load application time and the temperature. Thus an adequate mechanical characterization of the PVB must be performed in order to predict the response of laminated glass elements with a good ...

The pine weevil (Hylobius abietis) is one of the most devastating pests of regenerated coniferous forests in northern and central Europe. The Endoplasmic reticulum aminopeptidase I (ERAP1) trims peptides to their optimal size for binding to Major Histocompatibility Complex class I proteins. The natural polymorphism of this enzyme is associated with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) in epistasis with the major risk factor for this disease, HLA-B*27, suggesting a direct relationship between AS and HLA-B*27-bound peptides. Three polymorphisms that affect peptide trimming protect from AS: K528R, D575N/R725Q, and Q730E. We characterized and ranked ...

Birdshot chorioretinopathy is a rare ocular inflammation whose genetic association with HLA-A*29:02 is the highest between a disease and a major histocompatibility complex (MHC) molecule. It belongs to a group of MHC-I-associated inflammatory disorders, also including ankylosing spondylitis, psoriasis, and Behçet's disease, for which endoplasmic reticulum aminopeptidases (ERAP) 1 and/or 2 have been identified as genetic risk factors. Since both enzymes are involved in the processing of MHC-I ligands, ...

Hypothalamic AMPK plays a major role in the regulation of whole body metabolism and energy balance. Present evidence has demonstrated that this canonical mechanism is evolutionarily conserved. Thus, recent data demonstrated that inhibition of AMPKα2 in fish hypothalamus led to decreased food intake and liver capacity to use and synthesize glucose, lipids, and amino acids. We hypothesize that a signal of abundance of nutrients from the hypothalamus controls hepatic metabolism. The vagus nerve is ...
