A control algorithm that is robust with respect to wind disturbances for a quadrotor UAV attitude dynamics is presented. The proposed approach consists of a high-gain observer based on a discontinuous technique. Such an algorithm is embedded on board the quadrotor. The high-gain observer estimates external disturbances such as wind and parameter uncertainties, and a control algorithm is designed to compensate these undesired effects. The observer design is based on Lyapunov stability theory; simulation ...

Morphological and physiological characteristics of biological soil crusts (BSCs) enhance soil stability and fertility, and influence soil chemistry. However, the effect of BSCs on soil physico-chemical properties may vary depending on taxa (cyanobacteria, lichen, bryophytes) and species, and be susceptible to soil surface disturbance. We examined a wide variety of soil physico-chemical properties associated with five BSC components (cyanobacteria crust, one moss species, three lichen species) naturally ...

Rats eating high fat chow are more sensitive to the behavioral effects of dopaminergic drugs, including methamphetamine and the dopamine D 2 /D 3 receptor agonist quinpirole, than rats eating standard chow. However, limited work has explored possible sex differences regarding the impact of diet on drug sensitivity. It is also unknown whether eating high fat chow enhances sensitivity of rats to other dopamine (e.g., D 1 ) receptor agonists. To explore these possibilities, male and female Sprague-Dawley ...

The finding that endogenous ouabain acts as a hormone prompted efforts to elucidate its physiological function. In previous studies, we have shown that 10 nM ouabain (i.e., a concentration within the physiological range) modulates cell-cell contacts such as tight junctions and apical/basolateral polarity. In this study, we examined whether 10 nM ouabain affects another important cell-cell feature: gap junction communication (GJC).We employed two different approaches: 1) analysis of the cell-to-cell ...

Grazing represents one of the most common disturbances in drylands worldwide, affecting both ecosystem structure and functioning. Despite the efforts to understand the nature and magnitude of grazing effects on ecosystem components and processes, contrasting results continue to arise. This is particularly remarkable for the biological soil crust (BSC) communities (i.e., cyanobacteria, lichens, and bryophytes), which play an important role in soil dynamics. Here we evaluated simultaneously the effect ...
