Multiple cancers regulate oxidative stress by activating the transcription factor NRF2 through mutation of its negative regulator, KEAP1. NRF2 has been studied extensively in KEAP1-mutant cancers; however, the role of this pathway in cancers with wild-type KEAP1 remains poorly understood. To answer this question, we induced NRF2 via pharmacological inactivation of KEAP1 in a panel of 50+ non-small cell lung cancer cell lines. Unexpectedly, marked decreases in viability were observed in >13% of the ...

This paper describes how a Software Quality Observatory works to evaluate and quantify the quality of an Open Source project. Such a quality measurement can be used by organizations intending to deploy an Open Source solution to pick one of the available projects for use. We offer a case description of how the Software Quality Observatory will be applied to the KDE project to document and evaluate its quality practices for outsiders.

This study used farmers' responses to a questionnaire to investigate the practices they used against grasshoppers, locusts and other pests, the reasons for their choices, and the differences between the perception and control of grasshoppers vis-à-vis other pests. 313 farmers were interviewed in the Sahelian zones of Benin, Mali and Niger. The perceived relative and absolute gravity of pests, and the techniques used against them, varied between areas. Insect control techniques requiring cash spending ...

Adriaan D. De Groot,

In this article the vital importance of attempts at unifying psychology is emphasized, the obstacles are analyzed, and an initial strategy is proposed for the treatment of minor “schisms” as well as the primordial one between Krantz's “‘humanistic’ and ‘scientific’ systems of knowing.” The analysis leads to the conclusion that in a unified scientia of psychology—that is, science and humanities—defining can no longer be viewed as a largely discretional activity that is committed solely within the group ...

Summary Multiple anticancer drugs have been proposed to cause cell death, in part, by increasing the steady-state levels of cellular reactive oxygen species (ROS). However, for most of these drugs, exactly how the resultant ROS function and are sensed is poorly understood. It remains unclear which proteins the ROS modify and their roles in drug sensitivity/resistance. To answer these questions, we examined 11 anticancer drugs with an integrated proteogenomic approach identifying not only many unique targets ...

The principles behind the agile development methods and common practise within the Open Source community are vastly different. In recent years there has been a rise of interest in these, in order to detect and inform on areas of compatible shared practises. This paper argues that it is possible to quantify the level of agility displayed by Open Source projects. An indicator of agility, the Mean Developer Engagement (MDE) metric is introduced and tested through the analysis of public project data. ...

Adriaan D. De Groot,

It is argued that improving psychology’s internal consistency is a scientific necessity. One precondition is that proponents of various ‘scientific’ and ‘humanist’ approaches come to agreement on mission and methodological standards of psychology as a scientia (= wetenschap - science). The resulting demarcation problem is solved, in principle, by (Forum) theoretical definitions of the ‘scientific truth’ and ‘scientific import’ of statements. On this basis, (signific) concept analysis can provide agreeable ...

We describe the Developmental Profile and the development of the instrument, the theory on which it is based, and the manner in which information is collected, interpreted, and used in clinical practice. We present the results of the psychometric research that has been performed to date. Finally, we examine the extent to which this method is in accordance with recent insights within the field of personality diagnostics.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and its two phenotypes ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD) are essentially assessed by endoscopy, both in initial diagnostic work-up and during follow-up. This carries a high burden, especially on paediatric patients. Faecal volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are considered potential non-invasive biomarkers for intestinal diseases linked to gut microbiota alterations. We hypothesized that faecal VOC analysis by electronic nose allows discrimination of children ...

Based on two pre-validation studies and a final validation study a characterisation test for the determination of the leaching behaviour of concrete has been developed. The test protocol includes a tank test and an availability test. Generally, the emissions from the concrete specimen investigated were very low and often close to or well below the detection limits. Therefore, the development of a short-time characterisation test proved to be difficult. From the leaching results it could be deduced, ...

Women in pregnancy and postpartum have an increased vulnerability to develop an affective disorder. Affective disorders in pregnancy are associated with an increased risk of prematurity, dysmaturity (foetal weight below the 10th percentile as determined by ultrasound) and the development of postpartum depressive disorder. Untreated affective disorders and their complications may also result in considerable costs. Recent meta-analyses showed that interventions during pregnancy are less effective than ...

The use of antidepressants in pregnancy is increasing. Concerns have risen about the use of antidepressants during pregnancy and the risk of postpartum hemorrhage (PPH). The aim of this systematic review is to summarize evidence on the association between use of antidepressants during pregnancy and the risk of PPH. An Embase and Pubmed search was conducted.
