The adsorption of benzene, toluene, and o-xylene (BTX) in monocomponent and multicomponent aqueous solutions onto activated carbon was studied in a batch reactor at 23 °C for wastewater reuse. The kinetics and thermodynamic equilibrium parameters were obtained for all compounds, where the competitiveness for the active site of adsorption was investigated. The results showed that the order of monocomponent adsorption of these three contaminants is o-xylene > toluene > benzene, and in the multicomponent ...

Abstract Background Rickettsia parkeri strain Atlantic rainforest has emerged in Brazil during the last 10 years, with three laboratory-confirmed human cases. While these cases were epidemiologically associated with the tick Amblyomma ovale , in none of them the tick specimens that bit the patients could be identified. Results We report a clinical case of spotted fever rickettsiosis that was acquired in an Atlantic forest area in Bahia state, northeast Brazil. The case was determined to be caused ...

Actinomycosis is a relatively rare infection caused by saprophytic bacteria of the oral cavity and gastrointestinal tract that can become pathogenic. The chronic hyperglycemia of diabetes mellitus induces events that promote structural changes in various tissues and are associated with problems in wound healing. This infection remains largely unknown to most clinicians because of its different presentations, and palatal involvement is extremely rare. This report describes the case of a 46-year-old ...

Geographic differences in frequency and azole resistance among Candida glabrata may impact empiric antifungal therapy choice. We examined geographic variation in isolation and azole susceptibility of C. glabrata. We examined 23 305 clinical isolates of C. glabrata during ARTEMIS DISK global surveillance. Susceptibility testing to fluconazole and voriconazole was assessed by disk diffusion, and the results were grouped by geographic location: North America (NA) (2470 isolates), Latin America (LA) (2039), ...

Macrofouling bivalves are considered an ecological and technological problem worldwide. Control measures have been researched with Limnoperna fortunei, but without success. The aim of the manuscript is to test some alternatives to regulate this harmful invasive mollusk. Mortality and behavioral response (shell gaping) of Limnoperna fortunei exposed to three chemical compounds were evaluated. Values for LC50 96h were: 0.25 (0.24-0.27)mg/L NH3-N, 11.10 (7.45-16.55) mg/L MXD-100 and 88.51 (74.61-105.01) ...

Accommodating sea uses while protecting the ecosystems is a challenge of the marine planning and management process. The European Directive on Maritime Spatial Planning calls for Maritime Spatial Plans until 2021 developed within an Ecosystem Based Management approach. The main goal of this study is to support the Maritime Spatial Planning process with ecological meaningful information, namely identifying priority areas for conservation that are facing less anthropogenic impacts. We developed a ...

Phosphorus (P) reaches soils through both pedogenic and anthropogenic sources. This chapter provides a brief overview of the major sources and the dynamics of common P compounds and trace elements in soils and describes processes by which these P compounds act as a source for the mobilization and as a sink for the immobilization of trace elements. As land treatment becomes an important waste management practice, soil is increasingly being seen as a major source of trace elements reaching the food ...

In this paper, the effects of vacuum cooling factors on the weight loss of postharvest broccoli were initially investigated. In sequence, the vacuum cooling treatment conditions were optimized using the response surface methodology (RSM) combined with the genetic algorithm (GA) technique. Fresh broccoli samples were harvested from a Chinese farm, and the green heads of selected samples were cut into smaller pieces, with diameters approximately 3–4 cm, and sequentially equilibrated to room temperature. ...

In this work, a natural non-calcined kaolin was used for the synthesis of a geopolymeric paste. The effect of the natural kaolin characteristics and the alkaline activator ratio (Na2O.SiO2/NaOH) on the mechanical behavior of the resulting geopolymeric cement was determined. The chemical and mineral composition of the kaolin were determined by XRF and XRD techniques. For the synthesis, sodium silicate and sodium hydroxide were used in molar ratios of Na2O.SiO2/NaOH = 1.0, 1.6 and 2.2 and the curing ...

The design guidelines for recycled asphalt mixtures recommend rejuvenating the oxidized binder by adding recycling agents, which are viscosity and, consequently, temperature-reducing additives. As it is a component of recent use in pavement and its variety, there has yet to be a consensus on the determination of the recycling agent content or the ideal moment of its addition in the recycled asphalt mixture production process. This study aimed to analyze the fracture and moisture performance of asphalt ...

The POD signals implemented in the existing thyristor controlled series compensators (TCSCs) of the Brazilian north-south (NS) interconnection are solely intended to damp the low-frequency NS oscillation mode. These signals are derived from the modulus of the active power flow in the NS line that is phase-lagged at the frequency of the NS mode and experience relatively large excursions following exogenous disturbances. This paper attempts deriving the POD signal from the same variable but with a different ...

The present work describes the development of a highly sensitive amperometric sensor based on a simple and efficient carbon paste electrode modified with a new redox "mediator", 4-nitrophthalonitrile, toward detection of cysteine (CySH) in neutral medium at an applied potential of 0.33 V vs. Ag/AgCl. The sensor showed its best performance in 0.1 mol L−1 phosphate buffer solution, at pH 7.0. After optimizing the operational conditions, the sensor provided a linear response range for CySH from 0.8 up ...

The catalytic oxidation of dopamine (DA) at a LiTCNE (lithium tetracyanoethylenide) film modified electrode is studied by electrochemical approaches. The immobilization of LiTCNE was performed by a polymer (poly-l-lysine) to prepare this modified electrode and its application for dopamine (DA) determination is described in detail. The modified electrode showed a high activity for the electrooxidation of dopamine (DA) at Ep = 0.20 V versus SCE. The modified electrode presented a wide linear response range ...

Publisher Summary This chapter presents an overview of biological transformation and bioavailability of nutrient elements in acid soils as affected by liming. The chapter elaborates soil acidification as a natural process that can be accelerated by farming activities. Under managed farming systems, most of the acidity is generated from carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and sulfur (S) biogeochemical cycles in soils and from fertilizer application. This chapter briefly discusses the various processes that generate ...

Area-Based Management Tools (ABMTs) are spatial instruments for conservation and managing different forms of ocean use. A multitude of ABMTs exists in marine areas within and beyond national jurisdiction, ranging from tools for the regulation of specific human activities (e.g. fisheries, shipping, or mining) to cross-sectoral tools (e.g. such as marine protected areas, MPAs, and marine spatial planning, MSP). By applying expert elicitation and reviewing scientific and grey literature we evaluate the ...
