Abstract Background The World Health Organization recognizes exclusive breastfeeding a safe source of nutrition available for children in most humanitarian emergencies, as in the current pandemic caused by the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Despite the Brazilian national guideline protecting breastfeeding practices, there are many concerns about protecting infants from their infected mothers. This study aimed to analyze how the Brazilian hospitals and maternity services ...

Although it has been consistently found that local blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) changes are better modelled by a combination of the power of multiple EEG frequency bands rather than by the power of a unique band alone, the local electro-haemodynamic coupling function is not yet fully characterised. Electrophysiological studies have revealed that the strength of the coupling between the phase of low- and the amplitude of high- frequency EEG activities (phase-amplitude coupling - PAC) has an important ...

Octopus vulgaris is the most important target species in Portuguese fisheries in terms of economic value, when all official and non-declared landings are considered. Around 10% of the landings in national waters come from the trawl fleet, which is both the least selective and the best documented métier in the fishery, allowing the simultaneous assessment of distribution and population structure. This study represents a first attempt to integrate different sources of information obtained at commercial ...

Fleet dynamics was addressed for three cephalopod taxa of commercial interest, the squid Loligo vulgaris, the octopuses Octopus vulgaris and Eledone cirrhosa, and the cuttlefish Sepia officinalis, for 48 trawlers of the fish trawling fleet. Landing profiles (LP) were identified based on the species composition of the landings using hierarchical cluster analysis. Four out of a total of 12 different LP were related to cephalopods and other species associated with them. The effects on the landing proportions ...

The reproductive cycle of anglerfish was studied by examining fresh material obtained from commercial landings and research vessel surveys. The general morphology and histology of the gonads are described. This species has unusual gonads. The testes are tubular, and beanshaped in transverse section. The maturation process of the testis is similar to that of most other teleosts. The ovaries are confluent and form a single, flattened tube. During maturation, the width and, in particular, the length ...

This chapter investigates the traits in tourists' experiences: senses, emotions and memories. Senses (touch, smell, hearing, taste and sight) and memories are narrated and reconstructed beyond the cognitive, and our aim is to depict the social process. Mental travel time, tracks, features and even sensory modalities enact the memory, merging experiences lived in the environment with their inner livelihood. We propose to analyse the narratives and the photos posted on Algarve Regional Tourism Board— ...

Several strategies have been proposed to model and remove physiological noise from resting-state fMRI (rs-fMRI) data, particularly at ultrahigh fields (7 T), including contributions from respiratory volume (RV) and heart rate (HR) signal fluctuations. Recent studies suggest that these contributions are highly variable across subjects and that physiological noise correction may thus benefit from optimization at the subject or even voxel level. Here, we systematically investigated the impact of the degree ...

Ocean acidification is a result of the decrease in the pH of marine water, caused mainly by the increase in CO2 released in the atmosphere and its consequent dissolution in seawater. These changes can be dramatic for marine organisms especially for oysters Crassostrea gasar if other stressors such as xenobiotics are present. The effect of pH changes (6.5, 7.0 and 8.2) was assessed on the transcript levels of biotransformation [cytochromes P450 (CYP2AU1, CYP2-like2) and glutathione S-transferase (GSTΩ- ...

We have cloned the full-length cDNA of the first member of a new cytochrome P450 (CYP) family from the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas. This new CYP gene was obtained based on an initial 331 bp fragment previously identified among the list of the differentially expressed genes in oysters exposed to untreated domestic sewage. The full-length CYP has an open reading frame of 1500 bp and based on its deduced amino acid sequence was classified as a member of a new subfamily, CYP356A1. A phylogenetic ...

Central venous cannulation is a routine procedure. We describe a rare complication of internal jugular vein catheterization leading to radiculopathy of the right upper arm. MRI of the neck showed compression of the spinal cord and C2-C7 roots by the engorged veins. Digital subtraction angiography demonstrated a fistula between subclavian artery and internal jugular vein. The fistula was successfully occluded by stent placement in the artery.

Pacific oysters, Crassostrea gigas, were exposed to untreated sewage diluted in seawater. After 48h of exposure, the expression of genes associated to biotransformation pathways (CYP356A1, GSTO, MDR, FABP and ALAS) were analyzed in gills through semi-quantitative RT-PCR. A significant induction in all genes analyzed in the sewage-exposed oysters was observed. These genes are related to phase I (CYP356A1), phase II (GSTO) and phase III (MDR) biotransformation systems, to the uptake and transport of hydrophobic ...
