Following last year’s participation in the monolingual question answering (QA) track of CLEF, where Priberam’s QA system has achieved state-of-the-art results, this year we decided to take part in both Portuguese and Spanish monolingual tasks, as well as in two bilingual (Portuguese-Spanish and Spanish-Portuguese) tasks of QA@CLEF. This paper describes the improvements and changes implemented in Priberam’s QA system since last CLEF participation, detailing the work involved in its cross-lingual extension ...

Abstract The maker movement has reached the optics labs, empowering researchers to create and modify microscope designs and imaging accessories. 3D printing has a disruptive impact on the field, improving accessibility to fabrication technologies in additive manufacturing. This approach is particularly useful for rapid, low‐cost prototyping, allowing unprecedented levels of productivity and accessibility. From inexpensive microscopes for education such as the FlyPi to the highly complex robotic ...

This paper describes the work done by Priberam in the development of a question answering (QA) system for Portuguese. The system was built using the company’s natural language processing (NLP) workbench and information retrieval technology. Special focus is given to question analysis, document and sentence retrieval, as well as answer extraction stages. The paper discusses the system’s performance in the context of the QA@CLEF 2005 evaluation.

This paper accounts for Priberam’s participation in the monolingual question answering (QA) track of CLEF 2007. In previous participations, Priberam’s QA system obtained encouraging results both in monolingual and cross-language tasks. This year we endowed the system with syntactical processing, in order to capture the syntactic structure of the question. The main goal was to obtain a more tuned question categorisation and consequently a more precise answer extraction. Besides this, we provided our ...

Abstract Importance Sarcopenia, the age-related loss of muscle mass and strength/function, is an important clinical condition. However, no international consensus on the definition exists. Objective The Global Leadership Initiative in Sarcopenia (GLIS) aimed to address this by establishing the global conceptual definition of sarcopenia. Design The GLIS steering committee was formed in 2019–21 with representatives from all relevant scientific societies worldwide. During this time, the steering committee ...

This paper describes the changes implemented in Priberam’s question answering (QA) system, followed by the discussion of the results obtained in Portuguese and Spanish monolingual runs at QA@CLEF 2008. We enhanced the syntactic analysis of the question and improved the indexing process by using question categories at the sentence retrieval level. The fine-tuning of the syntactic analysis allowed the system to more precisely match the pivots of the question with their counterparts in the answer. As ...

Understanding the structure of supramolecular complexes provides insight into their functional capabilities and how they can be modulated in the context of disease. Super-resolution microscopy (SRM) excels in performing this task by resolving ultrastructural details at the nanoscale with molecular specificity. However, technical limitations, such as underlabelling, preclude its ability to provide complete structures. Single-particle analysis (SPA) overcomes this limitation by combining information ...

On September 8, 2001 around 2 h UT, the largest uranian moon, Titania, occulted Hipparcos star 106829 (alias SAO 164538, a V=7.2, K0 III star). This was the first-ever observed occultation by this satellite, a rare event as Titania subtends only 0.11 arcsec on the sky. The star's unusual brightness allowed many observers, both amateurs or professionals, to monitor this unique event, providing fifty-seven occultations chords over three continents, all reported here. We evaluated the impact of continued 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) use in the private market (uptake of 61%) in pediatric invasive pneumococcal disease (pIPD) in Portugal (2012-2015). Taken together, non-PCV13 serotypes were responsible for 42.2% of pIPD with a known serotype. The use ...

This work presents a new deep learning architecture, SpectraNet–53, for quantitative analysis of fruit spectra, optimized for predicting Soluble Solids Content (SSC, in °Brix). The novelty of this approach resides in being an architecture trainable on a very small dataset, while keeping a performance level on-par or above Partial Least Squares (PLS), a time-proven machine learning method in the field of spectroscopy. SpectraNet–53 performance is assessed by determining the SSC of 616 Citrus sinensi ...

Among the greatest challenges in the field of microporous solids is the development of "smart" materials, displaying environment-triggered property tuning. These could be used both in traditional and new applications of microporous materials. In this context, supramolecular peptide-based solids have recently emerged as interesting alternatives to standard microporous solids, such as zeolites and carbon molecular sieves. They possess framework and conformational flexibility, are kinetically stable ...

On the Portuguese mainland the most important low enthalpy field occurs in the graben of the Chaves region, where magnetotelluric measurements have been carried out to determine the crustal electrical conductivity distribution. The apparent resistivity and phase curves derived from the determinant of the impedance ...
