Ketone-based brominating agents (KBA), ortho-substituted 2,2,2-tribromoacetophenones, have been developed, and the highly enantioselective and practical α-bromination of aldehydes with KBA was achieved. The reaction could be performed in the presence of only 0.1–1 mol % of catalyst without using a halogenated solvent at 0 °C and was found to be scalable.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of anthocyanin-rich phenolic phytochemical (containing 13.2% anthocyanin) purified from a Haskap fruit (named Haskap phytochemical) on postprandial serum triglyceride and blood glucose levels. The Haskap phytochemical (containing cy 3-glc at 300 mg/kg of body weight) was administered orally to rats fasted ...

Abstract Abstract The changes in the Sámi ethnic religion practised by the indigenous people in northern Fennoscandia have often been described in terms of Christianization brought by Lutheran missions. The changes were, however, more long term and multifaceted. Archaeological excavations conducted at Sámi offering places have shown that the ethnic religion was never static, but the offering practices changed with time and in connection with changes in livelihood and society. In addition, syncretistic ...

Campylobacter remains the most commonly reported zoonotic agent worldwide. Reducing the concentration of Campylobacter on chicken meat is seen as the most efficient strategy to diminish the number of human campylobacteriosis cases. Analysis of risk factors related to characteristics of broiler batches and processing conditions could, however, not fully explain differences in impact of processing on contamination levels between slaughterhouses. Our study aimed at investigating whether compliance ...

Abstract Supported metal catalysts for wet decomposition of ammonium nitrate were investigated in order to develop the catalysts, which can convert both ammonium ion and nitrate ion selectively to N 2 and H 2 O under mild conditions, and to investigate the possible reaction pathways for simultaneous decomposition of ammonium and nitrate. Pt/active carbon (AC) catalysts were revealed to be the most active among the catalysts examined in this study. Effects of the reaction conditions such as metal ...

The use of bone wax (BW) is controversial for sternal haemostasis because it increases the risk of wound infection and inhibits bone healing. We developed new waxy bone haemostatic agents made from biodegradable polymers containing peptides and evaluated them using rabbit models. We designed 2 types of waxy bone haemostatic agents: peptide wax (PW) and non-peptide wax (NPW), which used poly(ε-caprolactone)-based biodegradable polymers with or without an osteogenesis-enhancing peptide, respectively. ...

Carbon monoxide (CO) hydrogenation in the liquid medium was carried out at 373 K and 423 K with an initial pressure of 5 MPa using a catalyst composed of a metal carbonyl and potassium methoxide. Among the metal carbonyls tested, nickel tetracarbonyl showed a peculiarly high production of methanol, and its performance largely depended on the amount of alkoxide. The role of alkoxide in the reaction was discussed.

Membrane fusion, which is the key process for both initial cell entry and subsequent lateral spread of herpes simplex virus (HSV), requires the four envelope glycoproteins gB, gD, gH, and gL. Syncytial mutations, predominantly mapped to the gB and gK genes, confer hyperfusogenicity on HSV and cause multinucleated giant cells, termed syncytia. Here we asked whether interaction of gD with a cognate entry receptor remains indispensable for initiating membrane fusion of syncytial strains. To address ...

Bisorbicillinol, which is isolated from Trichoderma sp. We showed that the inhibitory mechanism of β-hexosaminidase release and TNF-α secretion involved inhibition of Lyn, a tyrosine kinase. The inhibitory activities of bisorbicillinol indicate that this compound is a new candidate ...

For determining the effect of environmental pollutants on fish bone metabolism, we have developed an in vitro bioassay system using teleost scales that has osteoclasts, osteoblasts and bone matrix as markers: alkaline phosphatase (ALP) for osteoblasts and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) for osteoclasts. Using this bioassay, the influence of gadolinium (Gd) on osteoclasts and osteoblasts of goldfish scales was examined in the present study. Gd sensitively inhibited TRAP activity. Even Gd ...

Abstract Objective The pathogenesis of aortic aneurysm (AA) is characterized by the chronic inflammation of the aortic wall with the accumulation of macrophages and the degradation of the extracellular matrix (ECM) including elastin. Colchicine (COL) is an alkaloid derived from the plant Lily family Colchicum autumnale, and it is known for anti-inflammatory effects. Plant extracts containing COL have been used in the treatment of gout from ancient period. Currently, pseudogout, familial Mediterranean ...

Mumps virus (MuV) is the etiological agent of mumps, a disease characterized by painful swelling of the parotid glands and often accompanied by severe complications. To understand the molecular mechanism of MuV infection, a functional analysis of the involved host factors is required. However, little is known about the host factors involved in MuV infection, especially those involved in the late stage of infection. Here, we identified 638 host proteins that have close proximity to MuV glycoproteins, ...

Introduction - The pathogenesis of aortic aneurysm (AA) is characterized by destruction of extracellular matrix with chronic inflammation in aortic wall. The current available treatment of AA is either open surgical repair or endovascular repair, but there are still some surgical disadvantages and complications, and also surgically inapplicable cases for various condition of the patient. Therefore, it is necessary to develop alternative noninvasive therapy for AA. Recently, leukotriene D4 (LTD4), which ...

Abstract Background Oral semaglutide in older subjects with type 2 diabetes was as effective as in younger subjects, according to phase 3 clinical trials. However, its efficacy can be limited in very aged population, due to the presence of impaired cognitive function and the complex instructions for its use. Here, we investigated its efficacy and safety by further age bracket in older subjects in real-world. Methods We retrospectively studied subjects > 65 years of age with type 2 diabetes who started ...

Macular edema is a sight-threatening symptom in patients with retinal vein occlusion (RVO) and diabetic retinopathy. It is treated by the intravitreal injection of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor agents, but this has a physical burden on patients. Thus, it is important to develop a treatment that can be administered orally. The probiotic Lactobacillus pentosus TJ515 can reduce inflammation by regulating host immunity via its induction of interleukin-10 (IL-10). However, its action on inflammatory ...

SUMMARY Paramecium bursaria has hundreds of chlorella in the cell. These symbiotic chlorella cells supply maltose, a photosynthetic product, to the host. Only symbiotic chlorella retains the ability to release maltose to the extracellular space, whereas free‐living chlorella does not. To provide the host with maltose, a maltose transporter localized on the symbiotic chlorella plasma membrane is required. However, the molecular identity of the maltose transporter and its properties are unknown. To ...
