Disadvantaged communities suffer higher levels of physical and mental ill health than more advantaged communities. The purpose of the present study was to examine the psychosocial, behavioural and biological determinants of ill health within population groups in Glasgow that differed in socioeconomic status and in their propensity to develop chronic disease especially coronary heart disease and Type 2 diabetes mellitus. Participants were selected at random from areas known to be at the extremes ...

Socioeconomic gradients in health persist despite public health campaigns and improvements in healthcare. The Psychosocial and Biological Determinants of Ill-health (pSoBid) study was designed to uncover novel biomarkers of chronic disease that may help explain pathways between socioeconomic adversity and poorer physical and mental health. We examined links between indicators of early life adversity, possible intermediary phenotypes, and markers of ill health in adult subjects (n = 666) recruited from ...

In this paper we describe a two-plasmid system which allows over-production of the R.EcoR124I restriction endonuclease. The endonuclease has been purified to homogeneity in milligram amounts and has been shown to be fully active for both restriction and modification. Unexpectedly, the enzyme was found to require only ATP and Mg2 +for ATPase activity and DNA cleavage;S-adenosyl methionine (SAM), which has been described as a cofactor of type I restriction enzymes, is not required by R.EcoR124I. However, ...

To initiate protein synthesis, a ribosome with bound initiator methionyl-tRNA must be assembled at the start codon of an mRNA. This process requires the coordinated activities of three translation initiation factors (IF) in prokaryotes and at least 12 translation initiation factors in eukaryotes (eIF). The factors eIF1A and eIF5B from eukaryotes show extensive amino acid sequence similarity to the factors IF1 and IF2 from prokaryotes. By a combination of two-hybrid, coimmunoprecipitation, and in vitro ...

Cocaine abuse has been associated with sudden cardiac death with coronary artery thrombosis with or without underlying vessel disease. Additional vascular beds thus far implicated in cocaine-associated arteriopathy include thoracic and abdominal aorta, and pulmonary, cerebral, and placental vessels; abnormalities include vasospasm, thrombosis, and accelerated atherosclerosis. The nucleotide oligomerization binding domain 2 gene (NOD2) encodes an intracellular receptor for bacterial components, which is expressed in monocytes and is associated with Crohn's Disease (CD). This finding, along with epidemiological evidence, supports a role for infection in the pathogenesis of CD. Speculation that mycobacteria are involved in CD led us to investigate NOD2 in susceptibility to tuberculosis (TB), a global public health problem caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The Sicydiinae subfamily (Teleostei: Gobioidei) is the biggest contributor to the diversity of fish communities in river systems of tropical islands. These species are found in the Indo-Pacific area, the Caribbean region and West Africa. They spawn in freshwater, their planktotrophic larvae drift downstream to the sea where they develop, before returning to the rivers to grow and reproduce. Hence, they are called amphidromous. Their phylogeny has been explored using a total of 3545 sites from 5 molecular ...

Moderate alcohol consumption has been associated with a lower risk of coronary artery disease (CAD) in the general population but has not been well studied in US veterans. We obtained self-reported alcohol consumption from Million Veteran Program participants. Using electronic health records, CAD events were defined as 1 inpatient or 2 outpatient diagnosis codes for CAD, or 1 code for a coronary procedure. We excluded participants with prevalent CAD (n = 69,995) or incomplete alcohol information (n = 8, ...
