Abstract In this study, single and dual species biofilms of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli, two common bacteria associated with urinary tract infections, were formed in silicon coupons immersed in artificial urine medium. In single species experiments, E. coli appeared to form biofilms more easily than P. aeruginosa. In mixed biofilms, both species apparently benefited from the presence of the other, as the average Log total cells cm−2 of mixed biofilms (7.29 cells cm−2) was higher than ...

Azadirachta indica A. Juss. (Neem) is an Indian tree recognized for its activity as pesticide, as well as several pharmacological properties. Among the various compounds already isolated and studied from Neem tree, azadirachtin (AZA) was identified as the main bioactive compound. Azadirachtin can be found at different parts of the Neem plant but assumes its maximum concentration at the seed level. This compound features a quite complex chemical structure, which justifies the 20-plus-year difficulty ...

Milk is one of the most important food in the world, being consumed in natura or supporting the dairy industry. In Brazil, specifically, the milk supply chain corresponds to about 20% of its agro-industrial gross domestic product; however, the productivity of most domestic milk production systems are still characterized as low. In view of this, the Brazilian government supports training programs to increase milk productivity and economic returns, however, sustainability issues are usually left in ...

Abstract : Prion diseases are degenerative disorders of the central nervous system characterized by cerebral protein aggregation and deposition. A cellular glycoprotein, PrP C is converted in an altered isoform, PrP Sc , that accumulates in the brain, and is believed to be responsible for the neuronal loss observed in prion diseases. The synthetic peptide PrP 106‐126 shares many characteristics with PrP Sc and is largely used to explore the toxic mechanisms underlying prion diseases. In this article ...

Abstract It is usually accepted that prion and amyloid‐beta (Aβ) peptides induce apoptotic cell death. However, the mechanisms that trigger neuronal death, induced by these amyloidogenic peptides, remain to be clarified. In the present study we analysed the neurotoxic effects of the synthetic prion and Aβ peptides, PrP 106‐126 and Aβ 25−35 , in primary cultures of rat brain cortical cells. PrP 106‐126 and Aβ 25−35 incubated at a concentration of 25 µ m for 24 h, did not affect cell membrane integrity, ...

Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity is increased within and around amyloid plaques, which are present in Alzheimer's disease (AD) patient's brain. In this study, using cultured retinal cells as a neuronal model, we analyzed the effect of the synthetic peptide Aβ25–35 on the activity of AChE, the degradation enzyme of acetylcholine, as well as the involvement of oxidative stress in this process. The activity of AChE was increased when retinal cells were incubated with Aβ25–35 (25 μM, 24 h) and antioxidants ...

AbstractCholinergic pathways serve important functions in learning and memory processes. The loss of basal forebrain cholinergic neurons and the presence of senile plaques composed by amyloid β-peptide (Aβ) are found in post-mortem brains of Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients. However, the role of Aβ in the cholinergic dysfunction observed in AD is not yet clarified. In this study, we observed that the release of [3H]acetylcholine evoked by K+-depolarization was significantly lower in cells treated ...

The cytoprotective effect of vinpocetine [14-ethoxycarbonyl-(3α,16α-ethyl)-14,15-eburnamine] was investigated on PC12 cells treated with the amyloid β-peptides (Aβ) for 24 hours. Vinpocetine was shown to protect cells from the inhibition in redox status induced by exposure to Aβ25–35 and Aβ1–40, the maximal protection being achieved at a vinpocetine concentration of 40 μM. At this concentration, vinpocetine blocked the inhibition of the mitochondrial respiratory chain complexes II–III and IV and completely ...

Introduction:In 1988, Brazil adopted a universal healthcare model in which access is mediated by the primary care level. However, difficulties have emerged in the coordination of care between the primary and specialized levels. Telehealth was thus proposed as a means to overcome this challenge. This article describes initiatives developed by a large Brazilian program, TelessaúdeRS/UFRGS, in the fields of teleconsultation, telediagnosis, tele-education, and information technology development to support ...

The objective of this study was to characterize the trophic structure of the community of fishes exploiting riverine sandbank habitats. Collections were carried out during the period of October 1999 to December 2003, on six sand banks in the upper and middle portions of the Tocantins River drainage basin in central Brazil. The availability of food resources was evaluated based on the volume of the items present in the stomachs of all species. A total of 2,127 stomachs of fish belonging to 50 species ...

The Lajeado HR is the fourth hydroelectric power plant constructed in the rio Tocantins. The implementation of hydroelectric plants in the rio Tocantins basin is of high environmental concern because they may result in severe damage to the ichthyofauna. A species list of the area of influence of the Lajeado HR is provided, in the hope that it will contribute to the knowledge of this potentially threatened ichthyofauna. A few comments on the ichthyofauna of the rio Tocantins drainage are also provided.

Assessing sustainable development strategies and alternatives depends on placing human well-being and the environment at the core of policy efforts and developing accounting methods to determine whether countries are progressing towards increasingly equal well-being. In this work, emergy accounting was used within the five-sector sustainability model (5SenSu) for measuring resource use inequality. As a diagnostic proposal, the 5SEnSU model based on the theory of ecologically unequal exchanges and ...

Sulfate-reducing bacteria are rich in unique redox proteins and electron carriers that participate in a variety of essential pathways. Several studies have been carried out to characterize these proteins, but the structure and function of many are poorly understood. Many Desulfovibrio species can grow using hydrogen as the sole energy source, indicating that the oxidation of hydrogen with sulfite as the terminal electron acceptor is an energy-conserving mechanism. Flavoredoxin is an FMN-binding ...
