Agustín Rossi,

Snowden’s global surveillance revelations inverted the direction of the European Parliament’s debate on the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Before Snowden’s revelations, corporations were shaping Europe’s privacy rules. But when Snowden’s revelations raised the salience of Internet privacy issues, the power of corporations went down, and privacy advocates incorporated their preferences into the GDPR. Thus, the fact that Snowden was able to increase the salience of privacy issues was instrumental ...

In the 21st century, it has become virtually impossible to meaningfully participate in society without revealing our personal data. Many of the most necessary, entertaining, and useful internet services demand personal data that are then used for targeted advertisements as a condition of use. Service providers follow us around the Internet and across devices to show us ads and to collect more data. Credit rating agencies and financial institutions determine our access to mortgages and car loans ...

Purpose To evaluate the clinical outcomes and complications in a series of patients with painful partial articular cuff tears treated with the arthroscopic transtendinous repair with a minimum 2-year follow-up. Methods Eighty patients with a mean age of 51 ± 5.4 years who had undergone an arthroscopic transtendon repair for a painful articular-sided rotator cuff tear with a minimum of 2-year follow-up were contacted. Clinical outcomes using a patient-based questionnaire, the University of California at Los ...

Abstract Motivation: Structural characterization of protein interactions is necessary for understanding and modulating biological processes. On one hand, X-ray crystallography or NMR spectroscopy provide atomic resolution structures but the data collection process is typically long and the success rate is low. On the other hand, computational methods for modeling assembly structures from individual components frequently suffer from high false-positive rate, rarely resulting in a unique solution. ...

Manel Esteller and colleagues report truncating mutations in TARBP2, an integral component of a DICER1-containing complex, in human colorectal cancers. This is the first report of a mutation in one of the genes involved in miRNA processing in human cancer. microRNAs (miRNAs) are small noncoding RNAs that regulate gene expression by targeting messenger RNA (mRNA) transcripts. Recently, a miRNA expression profile of human tumors has been characterized by an overall miRNA downregulation1,2,3. Explanations ...

The European Data Protection Directive is often considered the Internet Privacy Global Standard, but this in only partially true. While the European Union sets a formal global standard, the 1995 Data Protection Directive has two loopholes that Internet companies exploit to set the effective global standard for internet privacy. The United States and Ireland have become safe harbours for Internet companies to collect and process Europeans’ personal data without being subject to the stringent laws ...

Global change anticipates scenarios of sea level rise that would provoke long lasting floods, especially in lowland areas of salt marshes. Our aim was to evaluate the morpho-physiological adjustment ability to deal with continuous saline flooding of Spartina densiflora Brogn. plants from lowlands and uplands along a subtle topographical gradient (0.2m differential altitude). Plants from both origins were subjected to continuous saline flooding (300mM NaCl) for 35 days. Responses associated to adventitious ...

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are short non-coding RNA molecules that regulate post-transcriptional gene expression. They influence a wide range of physiological functions, including neuronal processes, and are regulated by various mechanisms, such as DNA methylation. This epigenetic mark is recognized by transcriptional regulators such as the methyl CpG binding protein Mecp2. Rett syndrome is a complex neurological disorder that has been associated with mutations in the gene coding for Mecp2. Thus, we examined ...

Abstract We studied the electronic structure of highly defective NiO nanoparticles using X-ray and electron spectroscopies. The spectra of NiO nanoparticles exhibit splittings which are not present in the spectra of bulk NiO. These extra splittings are attributed to changes in the crystal field caused by both adsorbates and defects. Thermal annealing of the nanoparticles reduces the splittings observed in the spectra. The changes observed in the spectra up to 300°C are attributed mostly to the desorption ...

Abstract Allelic variation in the CETS (CENTRORADIALIS, TERMINAL FLOWER 1, SELF PRUNING) gene family controls agronomically important traits in many crops. CETS genes encode phosphatidylethanolamine-binding proteins that have a central role in the timing of flowering as florigenic and anti-florigenic signals. The great expansion of CETS genes in many species suggests that the functions of this family go beyond flowering induction and repression. Here, we characterized the tomato SELF PRUNING 3C (SP3C) ...

Abstract The effect of a series of polar, amphiphilic, and non‐polar solvents of various molecular weights on the glass transition ( T g ) of polyamide 6,6 (PA66) amorphous phase was studied. The sorption at equilibrium was measured by immersing the polymer in each solvent. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS) were used to characterize the T g of solvent‐saturated samples. It was observed that the solvent sorption provokes a drop on the polymer T g , depending ...

The high recurrence rates seen in open and arthroscopic Bankart repair in the presence of significant glenoid bone loss, Hill-Sachs lesions, or combined bony deficiencies have led many surgeons to choose bony reconstructions to manage these injuries. Although the Latarjet procedure has proved to be reliable to manage recurrent anterior shoulder instability, there have been concerns of a higher surgical complication rate associated with this procedure. Moreover, some of the complications reported ...

The global impairment of mature microRNAs (miRNAs) is emerging as a common feature of human tumors. One interesting scenario is that defects in the nuclear export of precursor miRNAs (pre-miRNAs) might occur in transformed cells. Exportin 5 (XPO5) mediates pre-miRNA nuclear export and herein we demonstrate the presence of XPO5-inactivating mutations in a subset of human tumors with microsatellite instability. The XPO5 genetic defect traps pre-miRNAs in the nucleus, reduces miRNA processing, and diminishes ...

In spite of its recent achievements, the technique of single particle electron cryomicroscopy (cryoEM) has not been widely used to study proteins smaller than 100 kDa, although it is a highly desirable application of this technique. One fundamental limitation is that images of small proteins embedded in vitreous ice do not contain adequate features for accurate image alignment. We describe a general strategy to overcome this limitation by selecting a fragment antigen binding (Fab) to form a stable ...

Abstract Heterobaric leaves have bundle sheath extensions (BSEs) that compartmentalize the parenchyma, whereas homobaric leaves do not. The presence of BSEs affects leaf hydraulics and photosynthetic rate. The tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) obscuravenosa (obv) mutant lacks BSEs. Here, we identify the obv gene and the causative mutation, a nonsynonymous amino acid change that disrupts a C2H2 zinc finger motif in a putative transcription factor. This mutation exists as a polymorphism in the natural range ...

The equilibrium sorption of ethanol–toluene–isooctane ternary mixtures (EX) in polyamide 6,6 (PA66) films is studied. These mixtures being strongly non-ideal, the thermodynamical activity of each component must be determined in the vapor phase, so as to determine the equilibrium sorption in PA66. A GC (Gas Chromatography) analytical technique was used to quantify the composition of vapor phases at room temperature. After equilibrium sorption of PA66 films in contact with EX mixtures, the desorbing ...
