Abstract: Secreted frizzled-related proteins (SFRPs), the first identified Wnt antagonists, have been well recognized as tumor suppressors in multiple human cancers through suppressing the Wnt/β-catenin pathway. To better elucidate the mechanisms of SFRPs involved in the carcinogenesis of oral submucous fibrosis (OSF), one of the precancerous lesions of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), we investigated expression and localization of SFRP1, SFRP5, and β-catenin in normal oral epithelium, OSF, and ...

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is a type of head and neck malignancy with a high mortality rate. Oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) is the pre-cancerous lesion of OSCC, whose molecular mechanisms in OSCC tumorigenesis remain largely unclear. Activation of the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway plays an important role in oral mucous carcinogenesis, although rare mutations of Wnt signaling molecules are found in OSCC, suggesting an epigenetic mechanism mediating aberrant Wnt/β‑catenin signaling in OSCC. ...

Locoregional flaps are widely used for reconstruction of small and medium defects in the oral cavity. The submandibular gland flap is a pedicled flap, which derives its blood supply from the facial artery, based on the submandibular gland. We describe the use of the flap in 20 patients who required oropharyngeal reconstruction with a pedicled submandibular gland flap after resection of a tumour between July 2012 and October 2014. Patients with squamous cell carcinoma were excluded. All flaps were ...

We aimed to assess and compare the expression of Dickkopf homolog 3 (DKK3), a possible tumor suppressor gene (TSG), in oral leukoplakia (OLK) and oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) using immunohistochemistry. Seventy-five cases of normal oral mucosa (NOM), OLK, OSF, and squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) were studied. DKK3 was expressed in all cases of NOM, OLK and OSCC. There was steady increases in the percentage of the positive cells progressing toward OSCC. The expression was localized in the cytoplasm and ...

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is a common malignant neoplasm of the head and neck. Oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) is one of its pre-cancerous lesions; however, the key molecular events in the tumorigenesis of OSF remain elusive. Dickkopf WNT signaling pathway inhibitor 3 (DKK3) is one of the Wnt antagonists, and its downregulation and methylation have been reported in multiple malignancies, while no report of its expression in the carcinogenesis of OSF exists. In the present study, we investigated ...

Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are a type of noncoding RNA transcript that are characterized by lack of protein-coding capacity. The vital role of lncRNAs in tongue squamous cell carcinoma (TSCC) is attracting increasing attention. In the present study, we identify a key lncRNA regulating TSCC metastasis and investigated the underlying mechanism. Our results indicate that the lncRNA ADAMTS9-AS2 is most significantly upregulated in TSCC tissues from patients with lymph node metastasis and is closely ...

Abstract Background The donor site defect remains the major disadvantage of the radial forearm free flap (RFFF). The purpose of this case series was to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of a local bilobed flap in direct closure of the RFFF donor site defect. Methods Between February 2017 and July 2017, a prospective study was designed with 13 patients who had undergone RFFF reconstruction of the oral cavity. The primary purpose was to assess the effectiveness and safety of a bilobed flap closure ...

The aim of the current network meta‐analysis (NMA) is to answer the following questions: (1) Does the extent of surgical resection of benign parotid tumors increase the risk of postoperative complications? (2) What is the best surgical intervention for treatment of benign parotid tumors that can provide an acceptable balance between tumor recurrence rate and other postoperative ...

The early detection of oral cancer (OC) at the earliest stage significantly increases survival rates. Recently, there has been an increasing interest in the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in diagnostic medicine. This study aimed to critically analyse the available evidence concerning the utility of AI in the diagnosis of OC. Special consideration was given to the diagnostic accuracy of AI and its ability to identify the early stages of OC.From the date of inception to December 2021, ...

The clinical benefits of simultaneous implant placement and soft tissue augmentation using different treatment modalities are unclear. The current meta-analysis aimed to compare the effect of simultaneous soft tissue augmentation using subepithelial connective tissue graft (SCTG) around immediate or delayed dental implant placement with other treatment modalities on the peri-implant tissue health and esthetic.Up to May 2021, four databases (PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Central, and Google Scholar) were ...

Letters to the Editor embryo replacement in conventional IVF/embryo transfer, rather than in patients with repeated failures. The statistical critique given by Dr Walters was mistakenly based on the 'small size' of our study. The determination of 'small' or 'large' is subjective and depends on the definition chosen. In clinical studies, an investigation comprising a group of 72 patients (as in our study) would not be considered 'small'.The issue of which statistical method should be used for analysis is ...

Objective The primary aim of this meta-analysis was to test the null hypothesis of no difference in facial nerve dysfunction in studies that compared classical antegrade facial nerve dissection (AFND) versus retrograde facial nerve dissection (RFND) during benign parotid surgery. Methods A comprehensive search of PubMed, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Scopus, Google Scholar, Science Direct and relevant journals was undertaken up to June 27, 2018. Randomized controlled clinical ...

Both gelatin and polyvinyl alcohol polymers have good biocompatibility to be used in biomedical applications. Cell adhesion and growth activity of gelatin have made it unique in artificial cartilage preparation. Two separate solutions of them are prepared by mixing 10% (w/v) of each one in water. These two solutions are then mixed at a temperature range of 70–90°C, and a pH value of 2 is maintained and finally it is cast into films. The dried films are gamma irradiated (using 60 Co) at different doses. ...

The primary purpose of recent research has been to achieve a higher power conversion efficiency (PCE) with stable characteristics, either through experimental studies or through modeling and simulation. In this study, a theoretical analysis of an efficient perovskite solar cell (PSC) with cuprous oxide (Cu2O) as the hole transport material (HTM) and zinc oxysulfide (ZnOS) as the electron transport material (ETM) was proposed to replace the traditional HTMs or ETMs. In addition, the impact of doping the ...
