By using the double resonance method, transitions F =5→ F =4 and F =3→ F =2 are measured for 7 2 P 3/2 and 8 2 P 3/2 states of Cs 133 atom ( I =7/2). Frequency shifts proportional to the input power are observed. In order to compare with the experiment, the theory of frequency shift due to radiation is generalized to the case of transitions between degenerate levels. The result of the calculation is in good agreement with the experimental data.

We present an exactly solvable model describing the interaction between a two-level system and the electromagnetic field. For long interaction times we evidence some purely quantum-mechanical effects, such as the destruction of coherence of radiation and the Gaussian envelope of the transition probability.

Milk was collected for the first 21 days of lactation twice daily from dairy cows and once daily from goats, sheep, and guinea pigs. Thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) were extracted from 100 microliter of milk using acidified ethanol. T4 and T3 were reconstituted in 100 microliter buffer and measured by radioimmunoassay. Concentrations (ng/ml) of T4 and T3 for milk of cows, goats, sheep, and guinea pigs, respectively, were: 0.97 and 0.94, 1.24 and 0.52, 0.99 and 0.79, and 1.41 and 0.53. T4 concentration ...

Eighteen lactating Holstein cows were used with six each in early, mid, and late lactation. Blood samples were obtained on 7 successive d. Blood serum and milk were measured by radioimmunoassay for thyroxine, 3,5,3'-triiodothyronine, and 3,3',5'-triiodothyronine. Prolactin was also measured in serum by radioimmunoassay. Serum thyroxine increased as lactation progressed and milk production declined (50, 55, and 62 ng/ml). Serum concentrations of triiodothyronine and reverse triiodothyronine were unchanged ...

Embryonic Stem (ES) cells-derived cardiomyocytes can possibly be applied for cell therapy of diseases such as heart failure. Biodegradable scaffolds will significantly improve the expansion of sufficient functional ES cell-derived cardiomyocytes and may also increase the survival rate of cardiomyocytes after their transplantation. In the present study, we cultivated cardiomyocytes isolated from a transgenic a-myosin heavy chain (α-MHC) ES cell lineage expressing both puromycin resistance and enhanced ...

This paper is grounded in the concept that it is the use of the technology to support language learning, not the technology itself, which makes a difference in language learning contexts. From this foundation, this paper provides a brief overview of some of the issues in the field of CALL that currently hold import and may be even more central in the future. It addresses concerns in research, teacher education, classroom practice, independent CALL, and developing technologies. The purpose of this ...

The problem of heavy metals contamination is a global issue and the challenge is to develop methods to remove heavy metals from soil and water. Recently, technologies using microorganisms and microbial products to remove metals have been successfully applied to waste water streams such as sewage sludge, and industrial effluents. Anionic bio-surfactants (Rhamnolipids) produced by the bacterium of Pseudomonas species has been effectively used as heavy-metal cleanup. This study investigates the feasibility ...

Hemangiopericytoma (HPC) is a rare tumor of uncertain malignant potential arising from mesenchymal cells with pericytic differentiation. It accounts for 3-5% of soft tissue sarcomas and 1% of vascular tumors. It usually presents in 5th to 6th decade of life. Most common sites are limbs, pelvis and head and neck. About 20% of all hemangiopericytomas are seen in head and neck, mostly in adults. Usually it presents in orbit, nasal cavity, oral cavity, jaw, parotid gland, parapharyngeal space, masticator ...

Soil seed banks serve as reservoirs for future plant communities, and when diverse and abundant can buffer vegetation communities against environmental fluctuations. Sparse seed banks, however, may lead to future declines of already rare species. Seed banks in wetland communities are often robust and can persist over long time periods making wetlands model systems for studying the spatial and temporal links between above- and belowground communities. Using collected soils and germination trials, ...

Proteins were extracted from the seeds of the fruit of the date palm. Proteomic analysis and SDS–PAGE electrophoresis of the extracted proteome suggested it is composed predominantly of the storage proteins glycinin and β-conglycinin, although over 300 proteins were detected, 91 of which were identified with confidence. In terms of protein type, the largest numbers of proteins were associated, not unexpectedly, with metabolism and energy functions, which reflected the requirements of the germinating ...

Background Understanding patterns of biodiversity is a longstanding challenge in ecology. Similar to other biotic groups, arthropod community structure can be shaped by deterministic and stochastic processes, with limited understanding of what moderates the relative influence of these processes. Disturbances have been noted to alter the relative influence of deterministic and stochastic processes on community assembly in various study systems, implicating ecological disturbances as a potential moderator ...

Thirty-three patients with low back pain underwent spinal fusion following a positively predicting external fixation test. Thirty-two spinal fusions and one sacroiliac joint fusion were performed. The complications following the use of the external fixator were significant. The results following spinal fusion were not related to the positive response to the external fixator. Multiple variables affect the results of spinal fusion. We feel that the external fixator test in low back pain management ...

Accurately predicting upslope shifts in subalpine tree ranges with warming requires understanding how future forest populations will be affected by climate change, as these are the seed sources for new tree line and alpine populations. Early life history stages are particularly sensitive to climate and are also influenced by genetic variation among populations. We tested the climate sensitivity of germination and initial development for two widely distributed subalpine conifers, using controlled- ...
