In this experiment, an electron- and optical-holographic technique is employed with small toroidal ferromagnets each forming a magnetic-flux closure. The holographic interferometry proves that a phase difference between two electron beams having passed through the field-free regions agrees well with the fundamental relation known as the Aharonov-Bohm effect. It is also confirmed from the same hologram that flux leakage from the toroids does not affect the conclusion.

The lipid moieties of (Na+, K+)-dependent ATPases of bovine cerebral cortex and bullfrog kidney were partly replaced with extraneous lipids, and temperature effects on their activities were investigated. The effects were found to depend on the lipid moiety, and to be constant with a given lipid regardless of the enzyme source.

A multi-clinic double-blind controlled study on amoxapine in comparison with imipramine, using the WHO Schedule for a Standard Assessment of Patients with Depressive Disorders, was performed and the data were analyzed with 111 patients. The assessment of severity of illness and overall improvement indicated clearly the superiority of the antidepressive effect of amoxapine to that of imipramine. The onset of antidepressive effect of amoxapine was clearly more rapid than that of imipramine, and in ...

The electrical properties of Li3NLiILiOH (1:2:x molar ratio) compounds are investigated. These quasi-ternary compounds have a cubic crystal structure similar to Li5NI2. The Li3NLiILiOH (1:2:0.77) compound has a conductivity of 0.95 × 10−1 (S/m at 25°C with an activation enthalpy of 24.6 (kJ/mol). All the compounds investigated are predominantly ionic conductors. The electronic transference number is smaller than 10−5 and the decomposition voltage of these compounds is about 1.6V at 25°C.

Urine from mutant mice which lack D-amino-acid oxidase contained a large amount of D-alanine. The alanine content was not changed by changes in the dietary composition or by starvation. However, oral administration of an antibiotic, amoxicillin, decreased the urinary alanine to the normal level. These results suggest that the D-alanine is not of dietary origin but of intestinal bacterial origin.

Systematic observations of fluoromethane clathrate hydrates were carried out by Raman spectroscopy. The series of fluoromethanes, i.e., methane (CH(4)), fluoromethane (CH(3)F), difluoromethane (CH(2)F(2)), trifluoromethane (CHF(3)), and tetrafluoromethane (CF(4)), were used as standard guest molecules to investigate the vibration modes of the guest molecules in the hydrate phase, since all of these fluoromethanes are included in the same crystal structure and share similar functional groups. In this ...

A diode-pumped Master Oscillator Power Amplifier (MOPA) laser system based on cryogenic cooled Yb:YAG has been designed, developed and its output performance characterised. The laser system consists of a fibre oscillator, an active mirror regenerative amplifier and a four pass main amplifier. 2.4 mJ, 10 ns, 100 Hz seed pulses from the fibre oscillator/regenerative amplifier arrangement were amplified up to pulse energies of over 200 mJ by using the four pass main amplifier arrangement. This paper describes the characteristic of negative group delay (NGD) circuits for various configurations including first-order, distributed, and second-order RC circuit configurations. This study includes locus, magnitude, and phase characteristics of the NGD circuits. The simplest NGD circuit is available using first-order RC or RL configuration. As an example of distributed circuit configuration, it is verified that losses in a distributed line causes NGD characteristic at higher cut-off band ...

A condensation nucleation light scattering detector (CNLSD) was adapted for use as a detector for supercritical fluid chromatography. The performance of the CNLSD was evaluated and compared to evaporative light-scattering detector (ELSD) using a well-defined equimass mixture of uniform poly(ethylene glycol) oligomers and a certified reference material of poly(ethylene glycol) 1000. The CNLSD was able to detect a 10 times less concentrated solution of uniform oligomers compared to the ELSD. The quantitativeness ...

Prey animals can reduce their risk of predation by detecting potential predators before encounters occur. Some animals gain information about nearby predators by eavesdropping on heterospecific alarm calls. Despite having well-developed ears, most lizards do not use vocal information for intraspecific communication, and few studies have shown practical use of the ears in wild lizards. Here, we show that the Madagascan spiny-tailed iguana ( Oplurus cuvieri cuvieri ) obtains auditory signals for predator ...

To understand the pathogenesis of equine exercise-induced myopathies and hemolysis, changes of phospholipid peroxidation products in the equine middle gluteal muscle and erythrocytes following the high-speed treadmill exercise were studied. Colloidal CdS was stabilized using a functionalized polymer for electron mediation. The kinectics of electron transfer from colloidal CdS to the electron mediator were studied using laser flash photolysis. In the presence of colloidal platinum, the photoinduced electrons were relayed to the platinum and hydrogen was evolved using a sacrificial electron donor. The efficiency of hydrogen evolution significantly increased when the pendant viologen polymer was used as stabilizing agent.

Mutation of the p53 tumor suppressor gene is recognized to be a key event in the development of the highly aggressive behavior of undifferentiated or anaplastic thyroid carcinomas. Attempts to treat these carcinomas with p53 gene therapy have, however, been largely unsuccessful. Since epigenetic changes such as histone deacetylation are associated with loss of thyroid differentiation, we have evaluated the potential of combining p53 gene therapy with exposure to the histone deacetylase inhibitor ( ...

The hermaphroditic freshwater clam Corbicula leana reproduces by androgenesis. In the control (androgenetic development), all maternal chromosomes and maternal centrosomes at the meiotic poles were extruded as the two first polar bodies, and subsequently, second meiosis did not occur. But, in C. leana eggs treated with cytochalasin D (CD) to inhibit polar body extrusion, the second meiosis occurred. At metaphase-I, the spindle showed the typical bipolar structure and two spheroid centrosomes were ...

Abstract Feto-maternal microchimerism suggests that immunologic tolerance exists between mother and fetus. Based on this hypothesis, we performed haploidentical stem cell transplantation (SCT) without T-cell depletion (TCD) in 5 patients with advanced hematologic malignancies. Recipient chimeric cells were detected in all patients. The prophylaxis against ...

Adherence to antipsychotic treatment is particularly important in the long-term management of schizophrenia and other related psychotic disorders since poor adherence to medication is associated with poor health outcomes. In this study, we investigated subjective satisfaction with antipsychotics ...

Lectin isolated from the seeds of Momordica charantia (MCL) is a galactose-specific glycoprotein. To investigate the effects of MCL on cell activation, we analyzed the responses of BALB/c splenocytes, thymocytes, T cells and B cells on MCL stimulation. Proliferation assays showed that MCL selectively stimulates the B cell subset of splenocytes (p < 0.05) in a dose and time dependent manner and that this activation proceeds without the involvement of T cells. Flow cytometric analysis revealed that the ...

In generating a digital elevation map from an interferogram obtained by interferometric synthetic aperture radar, the filtering process is as important as the phase unwrapping process. Before unwrapping, we usually have to restore the data image by reducing so-called singular points (SPs) by filtering process without destroying or smearing delicate fringes. Previously, an effective SP restoration method was proposed based on the complex-valued Markov random field (CMRF) model. However, there is still ...
