Transnational environmental crime has become the largest financial driver of social conflict, with severe implications for peace and security. Sustainable-development frameworks need to overtly recognize and mitigate the risks posed by transnational environmental crime to environmental security.

This paper summarizes, in a first part, results of greenhouse gas emissions from the hydroelectric reservoir of Petit Saut in French Guiana obtained during the three first years after impoundment (1994–1997). Results from three years of measurements have been extrapolated to estimate trends in methane emissions and the carbon budget of the reservoir over a 20-year period. Extrapolations were made using the global warming potential concept to calculate cumulative greenhouse gas emissions at a 100- ...

Natural killer and T cells express at their surface, members of a multigenic family of killer cell inhibitory receptors (KIR) for major histocompatibility complex Class I molecules. KIR engagement leads to the inhibition of natural killer and T cell activation programs. We investigated here the functional reconstitution of KIR in a non-lymphoid cell type. Using stable transfection in the RBL-2H3 mast cell line, we demonstrated that (i) KIR can inhibit signals induced by FcϵRIγ or CD3ζ polypeptides ...

We evaluated the importance of CD3-ζ ITAMs in T cell responses by breeding the P14 transgenic TCR into mice in which CD3-ζ chains lacking all or part of their ITAMs were genetically substituted for wild-type CD3-ζ chains. In contrast to the H-Y TCR, the P14 TCR permitted the development of peripheral CD8+ T cells harboring signaling-defective CD3-ζ subunits. The absence of functional CD3-ζ ITAMs did not reduce the spectrum of activation events and effector functions that constitute the normal attributes ...

We evidence two regimes for the flapping instability of a liquid jet atomized by a gas stream: a first one where it is synchronized with an upstream shear instability, and a second one where frequency is independent of gas flow, simply controlled by the ratio of liquid velocity to liquid jet radius.

We study the destabilization of a round liquid jet by a fast annular gas stream. We measure the frequency of the shear instability waves for several geometries and air/water velocities. We then carry out a linear stability analysis, and show that there are three competing mechanisms for the destabilization: a convective instability, an absolute instability driven by surface tension, and an absolute instability driven by confinement. We compare the predictions of this analysis with experimental results, ...

Since the seminal work of Venkatakrishnan, Bouman, and Wohlberg [Proceedings of the Global Conference on Signal and Information Processing, IEEE, 2013, pp. 945--948] in 2013, Plug & Play (PnP) methods have become ubiquitous in Bayesian imaging. These methods derive estimators for inverse problems in imaging by combining an explicit likelihood function with a prior that is implicitly defined by an image denoising algorithm. In the case of optimization schemes, some recent works guarantee the convergence ...

Bayesian methods to solve imaging inverse problems usually combine an explicit data likelihood function with a prior distribution that explicitly models expected properties of the solution. Many kinds of priors have been explored in the literature, from simple ones expressing local properties to more involved ones exploiting image redundancy at a non-local scale. In a departure from explicit modelling, several recent works have proposed and studied the use of implicit priors defined by an image ...

Alain Omrow Delon,

Environmental advocacy on American television draws upon utterly exhausted stereotypes, which have become part of a popular discourse. This article serves as an installment in an ongoing project at York University. It analyzes the ideological framing and discursive construction of environmental advocacy, suggesting that such portrayals perpetuate cognitive injustice through the perpetuation of stigmatizing discourses. The power of these discourses reduces the credibility of environmental campaigns, ...

Introduction: About 54% of all injury deaths in developing counties are attributable to lack of prehospital care. The study aims to ascertain the current state, determinants, and opportunities for strengthening prehospital care delivery in Cameroon Methods: From July 2015 to January 2017, Cameroon Trauma Registry was implemented simultaneously at Laquintinie Hospital of Doula, Limbe Regional Hospital, and Catholic Hospital Pouma.Data was subjected to descriptive and inferential analysis.A multiple ...

We have measured simultaneously the methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) surface concentrations and water–air fluxes by floating chambers (FC) in the Petit-Saut Reservoir (French Guiana) and its tidal river (Sinnamary River) downstream of the dam, during the two field experiments in wet (May 2003) and dry season (December 2003). The eddy covariance (EC) technique was also used for CO2 fluxes on the lake. The comparison of fluxes obtained by FC and EC showed little discrepancies mainly due to differences ...

Antigen recognition was analyzed at the single-cell level by using for the first time T cells which were not altered by in vitro selection, transfection or immortalization. The first consequence of antigen recognition by ex vivo naive CD4+ T cells from T cell receptor (TCR)-transgenic mice is the formation of a "contact zone" with the B cell presenting the antigen. The T cell intracellular calcium (Ca2+ ) response begins after a delay of 30 s on average, following the formation of the contact zone. The ...

Mortality prediction aids clinical decision making and is necessary for quality improvement initiatives. Validated metrics rely on prespecified variables and often require advanced diagnostics, which are unfeasible in resource-constrained contexts. We hypothesize that machine learning will generate superior mortality prediction in both high-income and low- and middle-income country cohorts.SuperLearner, an ensemble machine-learning algorithm, was applied to data from three prospective trauma cohorts: ...

The rapid and effective activation of disease resistance responses is essential for plant defense against pathogen attack. These responses are initiated when pathogen-derived molecules (elicitors) are recognized by the host. We have developed a strategy for creating novel disease resistance traits whereby transgenic plants respond to infection by a virulent pathogen with the production of an elicitor. To this end, we generated transgenic tobacco plants harboring a fusion between the pathogen-inducible ...

ABSTRACT HIV-1-infected macrophages participate in virus dissemination and establishment of virus reservoirs in host tissues, but the mechanisms for virus cell-to-cell transfer to macrophages remain unknown. Here, we reveal the mechanisms for cell-to-cell transfer from infected T cells to macrophages and virus spreading between macrophages. We show that contacts between infected T lymphocytes and macrophages lead to cell fusion for the fast and massive transfer of CCR5-tropic viruses to macrophages. ...
